the fight was very very close. im 15 just watched the whole fight for the first time i felt duran won. but you could have said leonard won.
Ray said I wanted to beat him at his own game and I almost did. Then Ray knew in the rematch he had to fight his fight and he did and won easily.
Never at any time during that fight did SRL look the winner or as if was going to be the winner:bart He fought out of his skin because he had too, he was fighting for his life in there & a most desperate battle for his own survival indeed. When have you ever seen SRL chased & harried across the ring from piller to post like a frantic antelope desperate to escape the relentless pursuit of a rabid hyena It's a 10/5 for Duran & thats being generous to Ray:yep Competitive throughout but there was only ever going to be one winner:deal When equaly matched & on a fair & level playing field the better man & better all round boxer prevailed & what makes this victory one of the greatest of all time is that Duran was a blown up lightweight who really should have been in the twilight of his career & he stepped up & whipped the P4P Goldenboy with an incredible display of boxing nous/guts & determination too totally nullify & stupify SRL.deal:deal
Lower the volume so you don't get carried away with the shocking **** sucking bias by the drooling ejaculate craving pro-leonard commentary albeit english or american & you'll see a very different fight:smoke
Bull****! If SRL was that confident he would'nt have jumped Duran for the November date knowing Duran was fat as a pig & refused point blank too wait till january, but he would'nt wait as he knew that to face a fit & focused Duran again meant certain defeat & he did'nt want another Montreal hammering did he. They told Duran's team to take it or leave it or they'd go after Cuevas so Don King said I'll take the money in advance!
I agreed with the live wire service report sent out between rounds ten and 11 that Duran won nine of the first ten rounds, clinching the fight on the cards. Roberto actually correctly announced this to his corner after the tenth. Angelo Poletti had no business scoring that bout. A judge is there to do just that, JUDGE, not waffle timidly and indecisively. However, how close can a 15 round fight be considered to be when the outcome is decided after the first ten rounds? In point of fact, Montreal was about as one sided as Duran-Palomino, and the final five rounds didn't matter unless Ray could somehow produce knockdowns or a come from behind stoppage.
Janks Morton has admitted on camera that he did not believe Ray could have defeated an in-shape Duran at that time. Certainly, SRL was never able to hurt him. (Probably in part because Ray telegraphed his shots, so Roberto saw everything coming in advance. That telegraphing of SRL's is why he had so much difficulty landing on Shields, Benitez, and in Montreal, no matter how fast he was.)
Ray didn't say he wanted to beat Duran at his own game? He did. And Angelo Dundee said right after that fight, you box this guy you win easy!! Whether they got the fight early to make it easier I am not sure, but no matter what Duran could never beat Ray if he boxed.
I don't know if Morton said this or not, but Leonard said if I fight my fight Duran could never beat me. And Benitez beat Duran the same way. If you stay one step ahead of Duran he cannot make the moves against a fast fighter.
Oh look, it's MAG once again spreading his mantra that Leonard chose to keep trading with Duran despite the fact he was losing, left his handspeed and boxing IQ at home, and that Duran's condition had nothing to do with the rematch.
Durananimalmhas it right. Leakage was good, but Duran was great! An old blown up lightweight, kicking laniards ass bigtime. Nobody was beating Duran that night. No way
Close but clear win for Duran. The rematch was also fairly close up until Duran quit. Conditioning was a factor. People forget that between the two fights Duran ballooned up to 190lbs. Getting back down to 147 was quite a feat in itself.
Ray was starting to land to the body and head when Duran quit. I think Duran knew he was going to get knocked out and he obviously knew he couldn't win.
