The Brit forums opinion on Taylor-Chavez I

From what I remeber - I havent see the fight in years - Steele would have known they were in the dying seconds as there was a red flashing siren at the ringside indicating they were in the final 10 seconds.

Thats what I remeber - a red flashing siren - or am I imagining that ? I'm sure there was.

 

Steele did exactly the right thing.

 

As harsh as it was on Taylor, and as Luke alluded to he never got back what he lost in the ring that night, I feel Steele did the right thing.

I'm pretty sure in the heat of battle when one person is getting beaten on, the last thing on the mind should be the clock. You would hope that the referee is concentrating soley on the fighters and monitoring his condition therefore I would like to think that Steele didn't know there was so little time and Chavez wouldn't have made it to Taylor.

I'm not the biggest Chavez fan anyway and I wish he would have left it, but then I suppose I wish that Marty Denkin would have stepped in and stopped Owen from fighting all those years ago.

if something serious had have happened in those last 2 seconds the finger would have forever been pointed in Steele's direction. The referee is there to stop the fighters getting hurt and thats what he did ultimately

I think it was a marvelous peformance from Taylor that night and as Steele was a vastly experienced referee he must have realised they were approaching the end of a round. You'd think after years of officiating you'd more or less know exactly how long 3 mins take even if you don't have a timer.

 

But judging by his discreet comments to a source after the fight - for the wrong reasons. He was just covering his own back.

The real question here - if it had been the other way around - Chavez was up on all the cards and Taylor knocked him down with 2 seconds left - would Steele have stopped it ? :-(

No way - his life and career wouldnt have been worth living - Don King would have seen to that.

That's basically it.

I'd rather see a million early stoppages than one late one.

Like I posted on the other thread - pherhaps Steele made the right decsion as one more punch could have killed Taylor some people have claimed.

Fair enough point - be open and defenceless to a deadly assaisan like Chavez he could get badly hurt.

But I think that Steele would not have stopped Chavez in the same situation.

Just my view.

Did that fight really ruin Taylor? I've only seen Meldrick's fights against McGirt and Chavez but looking at boxrec, he went on a good run after Chavez - even picking up a belt at WW.
