Haven't seen the full fight in ages, putting it on now to get me in the mood for tonights card. :happy

 

A legendary Larry Merchant quote, going on about the fight being a few weeks after Tyson/Douglas and the expectations for the fight.

"Following Tyson and Douglas is like Holmes following Ali. In Tokyo, Tyson and Douglas was supposed to be a little fast food sushi and happily turned into a four-star banquet. This fight is supposed to be a four-star banquet, so we might be disappointed if it turns out to be a little less."

Question is, how many vodkas had Merchant had by that point?

 

imo Taylor wasn't fit to take any more punches, so good stoppage.

Steele claims that Taylor didn't answer him when he asked him twice if he was ok.

The Tale is on Youtube Legendary Nights, and I agree with Merchant, Taylor deserved those final two seconds.

What ultimately lost him the fight was bad advice from his corner. He was winning that fight at a canter, and they were telling him he had to stand and fight. WTF?

 

Taylor should have been let to finish the fight amnd win it.

 

Steele's primary purpose in that fight was the safety of the fighters.

He saw a fighter with a broken eye orbital, who had (by his corners own admission) swallowed a pint and a half of his own blood, due to an internal cut. And being the finest referee of the era, Steele made a call to stop the fight.

The real reason so many people were pissed off with the call, is that those who thought they were in the know, figured style wise, Taylor was a nightmare for Chavez, and as Taylor was the betting underdog, they could make a killing...

 

Right decision, the amount of time left shouldn't come into the referee's criteria when stopping a fight. If he is unable to continue for 1 second never mind 4 it should be stopped.

 

anyone who hasn't seen that legendary nights chavez-taylor programme has to watch it.

cried when taylor spoke at the end tbh. so sad to hear him slur his words like that. :?

the thing for me is how quickly he beats the count. he didn't stagger up at 8 or 9. :nono he was up quick and ready to continue.

Yes, the evidence of Taylor's physical decline suggests Steele and/or Duva should of stopped it much earlier. Taylor was too brave for his own good and has paid the price.
