In all honesty, I think Butterbean hit harder, punch for punch. But Marciano could keep them coming all night, as he often had to do to put away the "better" of his opponents.
I think it's fairly beyond debate that he was an all time great puncher , P4P .... there are others in there or better like Langford or Satterfield but there is little doubt that he could sure crack for a man in his mid 180's ....
I mean, opinion is opinion and the value it holds from whom and to who is, ya know, what you make. For me the most impressive thing Marciano ever did was the 925. Relate 925ft-lbs to other things already measured in foot-pounds. Because pound of force, psi, etc. are two things 1.) Not even an ENERGY SI Unit. 2.) Conversions that are less accurate but give bigger numbers. I don't think I need to bag too much on it, but the truth is stuff like Jackson's pound of force measurement is basically useless. As useful as Francis's hardest punch ever recorded being put out in a big number followed by the word "units" ... ... ... useless. That said! Firearms and the energy of tires on roads put out by cars are measured in FT-LBS Rocky probably hit harder than your guns and vehicles, come of the combined. Bro if you got a civic and a 22 Rocco's right hand has about double the combined energy of both. What? That's inhuman. 185ish 5'10 or some such, Rocky, size wise, nothing special at all! How?! how 925ft-lbs? You can tell me oh but that wasn't in a fight. You can tell me oh I bet bigger dude in such a clinical situation can get higher. You're missing the GD point bro. Everyone, not just boxing fans, everyone who has an understanding of 3rd grade level physics should marvel at this human with the power of a machine some thousand times his weight. So to answer the question; God Tier. You may believe others have more power, seems hard for people to favor physics over size and that is fair enough, but if you believe anyone has any more USEABLE power you're a bit of a dope. No man ever survived 925ft-lbs to the dome. Hell man, if 925ft-lbs goes through a body. Your skin, bones, etc, don't get stronger with size, they get weaker. HWs can't explain how anyone survives 925, 925 having never ever landed in ring is the only explanation possible. To that end, I assume everyone hits harder out of ring then in and it's about the 150s where their power, from one punch, becomes deadly should they throw full force at a jabroni who does nothing but eats it. PS, Vey's right about the relentlessness. I've seen some rise in folks claiming Marciano's skills are not appreciated. Bah, they are, he's very good compared to me, you, some other rando jabroni from the net, but for a champion he's not and it wasn't any nuance that had him beat Charles. Raw, unabashed, attrition from an unstoppable juggernaut of pain and bash-bash-boom. Y'all doing Rocky's thinking for him, he just kept punching. His slickest move was that phantom overhead right. No i did not mean overhand, yes I am tired of being corrected by jabronis who shouldn't be correcting anyone, so I'm stressing this now. I typed overhead because I meant overhead. Point is Marciano's slickness wasn't how he beat the slick boxers of his time. His brutishness was.
Just watch the footage. Many punchers knock people out, but Marciano seems to numb them, even when they are significantly bigger men. I don't think that there have been many harder punchers for the weight.
well that's poorly written! I havn't time to fix all those ifs that shouldn't be and such but I will by-n-by.
Again, not sure if he's # 1 as there were other terrific punchers but he was in that class and that's a rare air for sure ...
Walcott didn't even enter his prime until his 30s, & was coming off the 2 biggest wins of his career back-to-back, vs. one of the best fighters in history. All but one of his other KDs occurred after Rocky smashed him. Prior to that, he'd been in battles w/ big punchers like Walcott, Satterfield, & Turkey Thompson & shown a stout chin. A LHW that had already won several fights @HW, had only been stopped once before in approx 90 fights, & was just one win away from a shot @ the HW title.
Satterfield was one of the hardest hitters in all of boxing history. Getting dropped only once in a fight where Layne took several of his best shots & then came back to win is far more of a testament to Layne's chin than a criticism.
Layne had a decent chin till Rocky ruined him and he gave up training (wasn’t a great trainer to begin with). He faced solid hitters and didn’t get knocked out.
