The championship rounds , imo, is what shows just how much heart and determination a figter has because at this point he has to push himself to finsh strong. These rounds also give a slow starter a chance to make up for the early rounds that he may have lost. Alexis arquello was decisioned by vilomar fernandez over 10 rounds whereas he most likely would have caught up to him in a longer fight. Arguello was trailing ray mancini after 10 rounds but put him away in the 13th. It would be more fair to slow starting fighters and and overall greater test of will.
Edwin Rosario became a titlist exclusively because of the elimination of the 15 round championship distance by the WBC.
Great photo mate! Dont know nearly enough about the history of local boxers, someone should do a book on 'em. Is there much film/footage available of him, I dont think I have anything of him (I'll have to check)
Yeah, go by the Calzaghe fight when he's an 40 some odd years old and his loss of stamina was the most damning and obvious hole in his game.
Hopkins was ancient in this fight. It's interesting that you bring up Calzaghe, though. He's another who would benefit from the 15-round distance, I think.
If you wan't to read up on local boxers you should check out "The Mersey Fighters" the lives and times of Liverpool's boxing heroes by Jim Jenkinson and Gary Shaw. There are 2 of them. Probably get tem in Borders. There is film of my dad available, Harada and Rose fights, Also McGowan 2.
AoFrancis have you got footage of your dad because i am intrested in british fighters and wouldnt mind seeing soem hopkins would have benifitted in his middleweight days in 15 rounders but now he needs the 12
there is a belief that the 12 round distance was installed under the guise of protecting the fighters. the real reason is that a 12 rounder is great for tv. it is about an hour long show with solid advert breaks inbetween interviews and prefight talks & thoughts. also alot of the heavies and middles owned by don king were good starters but awful finishers so a 12 round fight gave more benefit to an early starter. i also feel the reaosn why the 80's - 2000's heavy divison was at an excitement zenith due to to fighters like morrison, tyson, mercer, bruno ect who were exciting and real lookers but due to a 15 round they would of never finished the end of the fight. take it this way bruno would of never been a titlist, he was grabbing mcCall like a guy grabs his kids from social services. but due to the limit of rounds more lazier fighters could survive the later rounds, i mean all you have to win is 7 rounds and the fight is yours...7 rounds for a proffesional is nothing. just exciting the "facts"
