The below animated chart shows how the Top 10 Heavyweights (Ring Magazine) have physically become larger over the decades (1930s to 2010s + current top 10).

(NOTE: Viewable on PC and iPad - smartphone users can view by downloading - sorry)

The bigger the circle, the higher in the top 10 rankings of that decade.
Gold Circle = Top fighter of the decade
    Silver Circle = 2nd
    Bronze Circle = 3rd
Bold Text and/or Purple Circle = That fighter held the top spot in the Ring rankings for at least 1 year in a decade.
The Centre of the circle represents the fighters height and weight.

Thank you to Rummy's Corner (Top 10 Heavyweights by Decade). I don't know if you saw my message, but your rankings were a huge boon as a start point to help me create this gif.

I used boxrec to source weights and heights. I am sure there will be some debate over what was each fighters optimal weight, but I tried to pick a weight (often average) that they fought at during their peak Ring position in each decade.

Finally I used a combination of community rankings from boxrec, boxingforum24 and ring magazine to rank current day (2021)

    Enjoy

p.s. I welcome feedback. Spelling errors, contentious weights or heights, etc.

p.p.s. I wasn't sure which forum this was most applicable to, so I'll let the moderators delete as they feel is appropriate.

The gif might not work for people on a smartphone (seems fine on PC and tablet).

It should be transitioning through the decades from 1930s to 2010s

It can be viewed by downloading...sorry about that.

Any suggestions how to get gifs to work on BoxingForum24?

I added the 1920s. The early part of the decade is based on a combination of sources as The Ring Magazine started it's ranking mid-way through the decade. Here are the charts separated out by image. I will update the GIF soon.

Note the current list was not using Ring Rankings, but a consensus top 10. Also it was created before the Povetkin v Whyte 2 fight.

Quite amazing that Rummy thinks that Holmes beats down W Klitschko, V Klitschko, Fury, and Joshua.

None of them do anything , skill or style wise that Holmes has not seen.

But all of these guys would be confused and surprised at holmes jab, the speed , skills and movement.

Holmes was a well-trained athlete without fat , iron chin , unstoppable will ,
long reach (same as W. Klitschko) and not significantly smaller.

Fury would be difficult but i still see holmes as a Winner.

You can just click on the arrow in the top right hand corner of the gif in the OP. It should be "stuck" on 1930. This will take you to a full-screen view. You would then see a download icon at the top of the phone screen. Once the download completes I believe the gif will start.

The gif isn't anything special. It just cycles through the charts

Though I haven't had chance to update the gif with 1920s yet.

All of those guys would clobber Holmes, they all do things that Holmes hasn't seen, they're all bigger, heavier and more skilled than any contender Holmes fought, and by a mile in each area, Holmes got beat at his best by a guy moving up from light heavyweight, acting as if he could beat guys like the Klitschkos and Joshua/Fury is asinine, there hasn't been a LHW champion in world history who could move up and last the distance, much less beat the Klitschkos or Joshua/Fury. You think in Wladimir's decade long reign he didn't fight a little guy with a good jab? Nostalgia goggles

The official "top 10" is also out of step with the actual ability of the fighters, too heavily weighted on historical pro record and boxing politics. The real top 10 contains Fury, AJ, Usyk, Joyce, Hrgovic, Yoka, probably Wallin and Makhmudov. In my estimation, the top 8 heavyweights in 2021 (aside from 6'3, 217 lbs Usyk: the same dimensions as "big George" in Foreman vs Frazier) are all 6'5.5+, 240+ lbs and 6'7, 250 lbs Jalolov will be joining their ranks in a couple of years. The heavyweight division is thus the tallest and heaviest it's ever been at the elite level by a considerable margin.

It has always been like that. Top 10's are usually about greatness, meaning achievements, what each boxer does in his own era.
It isn't about who's better H2H, it's clear that modern HWs are better and would win in most cases, but it's not exactly a fair comparison.

How on Earth is Tyson not even second in the 80s ?!
How's Holyfield ahead of Lewis in the 90s ?!
    Those things are just wrong.

Clobber Larry Holmes ? Didn't Fury go life and death with Steve Cunningham ? A guy who was featherfisted and the same size as Holmes ? Cunningham would do well to win 1 round against prime Holmes LOL. Fury was not in his prime but neither was Holmes when he lost to Michael Spinks, and he got robbed in the rematch anyway. Usyk who is close to the size of Holmes made Klitschko look foolish in sparring and handled Chisora far easier than Parker or Whyte did. Klitschko would give Holmes issues but he is not David Haye. His jab is quicker, better and longer, he had quicker hands, better mobility and better ring iq. Holy hell their ring iq is levels apart. And lets not get started on Aj, he struggled to outbox a 39 year old Povetkin and got slapped around by Ruiz, he also got schooled by 6'4 Erislandy Savon in the Olympics and he has yet to fight somebody with that mobility in the pros, although he's scheduled to fight Usyk. Usyk however might show up bloated and muscular, possibly loosing his speed advantage, and could get blasted out for it. You also going to forget when Holmes schooled Ray Mercer ? The same Ray Mercer that gave 6'5, 245lb Lewis hell ?

I am no blind nostalgic old head but im not clueless either. Only an idiot would say that Holmes easily beats SHWs like Klitschko or Lewis or Fury or Vitali but only an idiot would also say he doesn't have the skills to pull of a win. I know you're going to bring up 6'6 Gerry Cooney but Cooney was a slugger who tried to heavily press the issue and threw quick combinations unlike prime Wladimir or Fury. Regardless Holmes controlled that fight from in range and out and was comfortably ahead on my scoring and any rational persons scoring before the stoppage.
