I was brushing up on Charley Goldman, or rather trying to. Hall of fame trainer, a fighter with over one hundred bouts and perhaps even hundreds of unverifiable ones. Obviously the trainer of the only HW champion to retire for good undefeated as well as the likes of Lou Ambers and Kid Gavilan. Pretty much all I can remember ever reading about him or hearing about him without relation to training Marciano was the same thing. Likable, media friendly, real character, respected trainer. There ya go. Same thing, over and over. What say you all? Got some anecdotes, articles, whatever to share or discuss about his role in boxing history and who he was? His Wiki article is practically a stub, all things considered.

Boxed Ears, In the 1940s, I wouldgo as a youngster religiuosly, to the legendary Stillman,s Gym.I would see the great fighters of that Golden Age train...Many HOF boxers and great trainers of the time such as Ray Arcel, Whitey Bimstein, Freddy Brown,Chickie Ferrara, and occasionally Charley Goldman...He was a small man , and I recall even in the summer, wear a black derby on his noggin...In his youth ,around 1910 or so he was befriended, by Terrible Terry McGovern, featherweight champ, and was part of his entourage...He,it is said had over 200 bouts in his youth, but no title shots...Of course, being Rocky Marciano,s trainer brought him fame...Last time I saw Goldman was in the early 50's,with Marciano , who was training at Grossingers,NY....

John Garfield, Quite sure we rubbed shoulders at Stillmans Gym in bygone days...So many anecdotes, and memories,yessir....I rememember when I saw Marciano train at Grossinger,s airport in early 1950s, the price of admission was one buck, and who collected the money at the front door, but Al Weill, Rocky,s mgr....Seeing Rocky box from a few feet away ,we noticed his powerful thighs, built for punching power...In 1949 I saw Marciano annihilate Carmen Vingo in 6 rounds sending Vingo to the hospital across the street from MSG....Memories...
