I have had the pleasure of communicating a lot with Fighting Harada in recent times. It was my pleasure to make sure this official Eder Jofre shirt was sent to him. Harada has sent over some signed photos for the Jofre family and is sending over 2021 Fighting Harada gym calendars.

“When I beat Jofre,he lost for the first time during his professional career. He must have a hard time ,but in the ring he came to me,and lifted me up,and said Congrats! I was not be able to believe that.Eder Jofre is such a gentle man. With no doubt Jofre was the strongest boxer I have fought in the ring, and he had the biggest heart. This is the reason why I respect Jofre,he is a real champion of the world. The best of all boxers” - Harada

My connection for Harada said that Harada was watching the first fight with Medel and said that it was his favorite fight even though he lost. “Yes, I lost, but I was falling down forward with punching, this is my style.” He appears to have a great amount of affection for every opponent.

If anybody would like to ask anything to Harada please let me know. I am planning to write a detailed feature on him soon. I’d like you guys to have some input in the way of asking some good questions.

    Cheers!

Ask him about Ebihara fight. Memories and details. There's no film about it...

I may have a small clip of that fight coming my way. It was a wild fight apparently. Here’s what I was told last time about that fight:

“Harada fought Ebihara at the East Rookie King bout.Harada knocked down Ebihara three times,at late round Harada suffered from Ebihara's left punches.Ebihara was one of Harada's best friends,I remember Harada cried at Ebihara's funeral, and said Ebihara was a real boxing genius.”

“There's no doubt Jofre was the greatest boxer I faced in the ring in my boxing career. I had couple of fights with Jofre, through the long and tough 30 rounds, I was suffering from his strong punches. And one more thing I would like to tell you, Eder Jofre is a man with his own dignity. He is a gentle man. Through my life time, I'd like to have him as my best friend. I miss him very much, I would like to see him one more time.”

Ask him who he thinks would win in a street fight. McVey or Mendoza

Not anything in particular, just generally curious what his opinion of him is.

Hey Chris, nice to see this on Harada again. Love getting a little piece of info now and again. Thanks for asking about his trainer last time. Here's some new ones:

Who were Harada's inspirations in his boxing career and life? Was it a fighter, historical figure etc?

What does Harada think of the later and current modern Boxing scene, particularly in Japan? Were there any fighters / fights that stood out to him? I ask as I recently re-read the 'no more fighting Harada's' article, but that was from 32 years ago, and he probably has changed his mind a bit with the Japanese boxing boom in the 90s and beyond.

How did Harada develop such a fantastic jab and footwork?

    Thanks for your posts Chris!

That photo is the dog's bollox Chris, nice one mate. Moving words about Jofre and Ebihara too, warming to read.

I'm curious about what he thought of Caraballo, Aoki and the Esparza fight tbh, where he lost an SD in Japan, which is fairly rare for a national superstar over there.

Also, I remember a story from @AlFrancis about Harada and Fammo defending Rose from a couple of drunken racist thugs outside of an event in the UK in the seventies I think. Something about Harada not knowing much English but quickly putting himself between Rose and the attacker when things got ugly, with Fammo sending them on their way with their tails between their legs. Great story if true, I'm curious if Harada recalls it.

Also, if he felt that he could have stayed at flyweight longer. Lots of questions I know, sorry.

I'm well jealous btw that you have access to the great man.

Also, did he enjoy screaming with the other insane Japanese commentators when he was one?

You wouldn't mess with Harada in the Sake bar.

Here’s a nice message I got from our mutual friend:

“Harada's manager gave me a phone, he told me that the t-shirt would be displayed on the wall in Fighting Harada Boxing club. Everyday when Harada comes to his club, Harada says "Hi, Jofre" to the t-shirt. When I heard this from Harada's manager, I almost cried. I will bring the photo which Andrea took a couple days ago. And I will display it there. “

Harada’s friend told me this. We are including this little story in Estadao which is São Paulo’s largest newspaper. I will be featuring Harada in an in-depth series piece towards the end of the year. He’s such a humble and kind man. Truly a gentleman. Makes you proud of boxing.
