Wow great clip .. never saw it .. so at 20 he weighted 201 pounds .. still fifteen more than Rocky when Rocky was thirty .. not unusual for heavyweights to put on weight as they grow .. Dempsey fought in the low 170's early, Ali in the low 190's, Johnson in the 180's and so on .. I'd say the prime Tua was 226 or so for Ruiz and Ike ..
But Rocky was 192 for his first fight. There is not much difference between 192 and 201. Rocky trained to cut size because he was a product of his environment and Tua puffed himself up because was also a product of his environment.
Tua was chubbier at 201 than at 220+. Tua turned Pro at 200 because it was a HW requirement and his team wanted him there, simple as that. His physique was transformed to 220 plus with more muscle for obvious reasons, nobody would want their guy giving up 20 pounds or more every night, he then never stopped packing on weight.
You mean when he was still a teenager? He is 19 years old in the photo above. Tua was a natural 220 guy. Had the pleasure of watching him train up close and personal. He had a huge frame and about the heaviest hands I have ever seen.
You can increase your frame via bone density into your mid 30s based on diet. Nothing natural about it, Tua turned pro just at the requirement of the division then was bulked up to the division average.
I don't understand the relevance of your statement to what I said. I merely said that the picture of Tua at 202 was taken when he was 19 years old. And to expect him to maintain that weight into his actual prime would be ludicrous and self defeating. At 19, Joe Louis was 180 pounds, Ali was 190, Holmes was 185...etc... etc... But putter along in pedantic nonsense that allows Marciano to be rationalized into being the equivalent of a modern heavy...
If Tua was a natural 220 guy then Rocky was a natural 211 guy. The two of them turned pro 9lb apart. Rocky got lighter because that’s what they did in those days and Tua got bigger because that’s what they did in his day. If Tua was a natural 220 guy what was he doing at 201 as an already chubby pro?
What nonsense about Marciano? I havent mentioned him. I was addressing the All Natural Big Frame Tua nonsense. If you are eating enough in your 20s to add 30 to 50 pounds of gains, then you will increase your frame. Like most fighters, Tua trained and ate to be in the weight range of his contemporaries, before he became a Sumo.
The relevance is that at 201 in 1947 Tua trained by Goldman would have shaved off the corresponding amount from his chubby frame and completed his career in the 190s wouldn’t he? That’s the relevance of it.
There would be need for him to bulk up in the 50s, he likely wouldnt have even turned Pro at a husky 201...its painfully obvious they were just trying to get him over the 200 limit to debut.
