“Glass jaw? I’ve been beaten, but only by champs. I’m still around after 17 years. If I had a glass jaw, could I have lasted so long? I have never been counted out. Let’s say, if it will make some people happy, that I have a glass jaw. But I also have an iron will. I may go down, but I get up.” https://hannibalboxing.com/after-the-fall-the-comeback-of-floyd-patterson-part-iii-quarry-ali/
Oh good lord! How many ex-HW Champs had a more impressive record after losing the title? How many ex-HW Champs continued to be ranked in the top ten contenders for so many years after? He ran the table on Machen, he outworked Chuvalo taking a few bomb shots along the way. The negative reporting after Ali in 65 was uncalled for. Put Henry Cooper to sleep in short order! Quarry? Knocked down 4 times, three of them 'flash' shots. The other one was a Quarry right that he couldn't have timed ANY better! And...Floyd rose and kicked Jerry's arse, giving away the last two rounds in route to a 'MD'. The rematch was boring but many saw Floyd as the winner. He simply didn't turn it on enough to warrant wins in both fights. Ellis? Make your own call; at the end an unmarked Floyd accepting the defeat and Ellis looking like, in Cosell's words, a bloody pulpy mess! Devil Green? That pr**k butted Floyd which led to the early terrible Ali eye stoppage 2 years later! Bonavena? Falling behind early, 37 year old Floyd rallied to take the decision and a subsequent fight with Ali. I'm rambling with my usual "$0.02"
Love me some Floyd. His dvd career set is one of my favorites. He took a lot of heat for all the kd's, but some of them were just off-balance shots, although I think he did get counted out against Liston but so what? He always came to fight and was all class.
