If Joe Cortez allows lots of rough and dirty tactics by Bernard in this fight but didnt allow Hatton ANY kind of inside work whatsoever even though watching the fight a few times shows just how much Flloyd elbowed hatton, does this tell us that cortez has his own agenda here? Because surely if a referee has a certain style of officiating and wont allow the rough stuff, why would he then go against his principles?? Unless it was to favour a home fighter. This is my one and only doubt before this fight, I truly beleive Calzaghe wins this and thank god he can rough it when it gets tough inside too because at times in the fight he will have to do this, but watching cortez early in this fight will be just as facinating. I always thought Cortez was one of the best referees, but then knowing Hatton and his style and taking that strength away from him was very telling indeed, but dont get me wrong Flloyd boxed superbly that night im not hating Flloyd here, but cortez will be under the microscope in this fight too.
What Cortez got wrong was not warning Mayweather for ducking below the belt and the elbows. Everyone said he was breaking up everytime they got inside, but he was breaking up clinches, both fighters were doing this a lot early.
Cortez will allow Hopkins to get away with murder, the fix is in just like the PBF-Hatton fight.:smoke
I think that why Calzaghe is going for a knockout victory, he knows trying to get any decision will be very hard.
I think you misunderstood. What I'm saying is Bernard will be able to get away with dirty tactics because he is capable of doing it discreetly and in a clever way, out of view from the referee, unlike Ricky.
Calzaghe has no chance of koing Hopkins who is one of the most mentally tough fighters in the sport he's chin is iron as well, I'd bet my life on that. Calzaghe couldn't even put away Lacy after kicking his ass around the ring for 12 rounds no way in hell does he stop Hopkins...no way!
I don't think Cortez was crooked or had an agenda at all, but I do think he was pressured by a star fighter and wilted under the pressure. I honestly think Floyd's team made a huge deal to him about Hatton's roughhousing, and Cortez was seemingly convinced all the nonsense was coming from Ricky. Don't think he's crooked in the least, but he dropped the ball in a massive way during that fight. Floyd would have won regardless, but it would have been nice to at least let them fight without warning Ricky for **** he never did and ****ing up the flow of the fight.
Good point! I take what your saying, and yes floyd and co did make a big deal of it before the fight, but you would think that cortez has reffed them all in his career surely he doesnt get star struck does he??
Fair but firm won't **** around, if Popkins start's his usual dirty **** Cortez will be in his grill, warning him and taking points if he has too, if the old fart get's to far behind he may feel he has nothing to lose, and start using elbows, his dome and even the ring post if possible..
