He was once 4th in the Ring P4P rankings? ****ing hell, I don't think even I would've had him there, whenever it was.
Really? I think the highest I've had him was about 6th. When was this, as a result of the Munoz fight?
It was definitely during the zenith of his reign, yeab - somewhere between Arce and Darchinyan. I'm not exactly a "keeps a p4p list" kind of guy (much less a "keeps lists up to date at all times and documented" guy) so can't say for certain. It was more just that during that run of excellent form he was IMO one of the three most effective head to head / pound for pound fighters active. I don't have some complex formula assigning hierarchal value to h2h effectiveness and resume like all you silly old list-making folk. The Navarro and Munoz performances were both masterclasses IMO. (the Munoz performance more dominant; with Navarro the better opponent). **** Mrs. Tucker for gestating that slime to full term and naming it Doug rather than shredding it with a rusty coathanger.
Ignorance. I started the Mijares hype. Amsterdam jumped on my bandwagon. ...and again, you're welcome. As spectacular as the Arce performance was (and on a big stage) somehow it just didn't generate a whole lot of buzz on ESB. Maybe it was overshadowed by Pacquiao-Solis and Viloria-Sosa on the same card, being bigger "events". :conf Had it not been for my nudging and prodding, a lot of people might not have been otherwise bullied and beleaguered into paying attention to Mijares during his Very Good Years. Regardless of whether he had some downturn(s) of luck or failed to reach the heights - yet - that some of us proclaimed him capable of...he's still one of the most skilled operators of his generation and with one of the most gorgeous styles...unless you ask about half of professional judges. The whole "Mijares is god" angle was just another creative way (like "Koki Kameda") to draw attention from the casuals/'tweeners/less-globally-minded-"diehard" boxing fans to a very skilled competitor who was worthy of a sidelong glance. A little exaggeration never hurt anyone - particularly not on a boxing forum. If it's OK for Pacweather threads to invoke the name of Sugar Ray Robinson as an inferior to either of those two - nothing is really out of bounds, is it?
:yep Nah, I don't really keep pound for pound lists either, they often strike me as mass popularity contests for the most part and as a result I often don't put an awful lot of credence in them. Just strikes me as odd, as I can never recollect Diamante being that highly rated by most, then again, my join date would obviously suggest that I wasn't around to see the brunt of the 'hype' he was being showed with all over that glistening, often-pivoting body(erm, no homo?:?). What is it with judges and Cristian though? I mean, **** me do they try to conspire to **** him over in almost every fight. There's having a style that isn't judge-friendly and then there's that, I almost spat my drink that I was sipping out of my custom-made Mijares-Mug(for illiteration purposes) all over the place when that ****er Tucker's(which should really be his kind of villan name, some kind of evil power that attempts to deny stylish fighters what they're due) scorecard was announced.
Ah god, not the judges. Amsterdam told us in every post about how criminal the scoring against Mijares was The holy trinity = Mijares, Guzman, Calzaghe Big fan of Gamboa too as I remember.
I never quite got a taste for those other six nuts. :yep All fine talents, of course - they just never spoke to my soul like El Diamante did (and does). Calzaghe...well, there have been more than enough threads on him to last all our lifetimes. Let them debate him in the Classic forum in the 22nd century. Bottom line - he's the guy who handed one of my other favorite boxers his first professional loss, so I have a sort of obligatory respect/hate relationship with old china hand Joe. Guzman...oozing with ability, but man. What a stupid selfish dickhead. He deserves the dead end cul-de-sac he's found himself chasing his tail in. Gamboa...I always believed he'd beat Lopez, but never believed he'd become the best boxer in the world (or that his tried-and-true powers of recovery were quite good enough to ensure that his occasional susceptibility to being caught and decked doesn't ever see him get KTFO). I'm still quite excited to see where the rest of his career goes, but am not exactly waving a pom-pom either. For the record (broken record though it is) - judges DO heinously devalue Mijares. If you haven't seen the Navarro debacle - or haven't revisited it recently - please do. It isn't one of the worst scorecards of the last decade or so. It's one of the worst of ALL TIME. That is not an exaggeration.
You should be about Gamboa. He's the fighter in the whole sport that excites me most. I don't even care if he loses some. He's going to win some good ones as well, and they're ALWAYS going to be good viewing. He's got 2/3 years I think, then he'll be all washed up. He was the most impressive prospect coming through in his first 10 or so fights I've seen in a long time.
BTW, WTF is up with the IBF? Where did Malik Bouziane go? He was recently scheduled to face Mijares for the title, and there was all that drama over whether it would be him or Martinez (who was the top contender, but Bouziane wasn't far off and had the date booked first). Now he isn't even top 15? :huh edit: I see. He's been inactive for sixteen months. Damn, waiting around for that title shot really hurt him. He must have an axe to grind with both Martinez and Mijares, which could be something to bear in mind if he ever gets in with either of them. :think
