I don't know Johnny Hartman, jowcol. I could try and google it but would prefer it from the horse's mouth how you got your moniker. Would you care to expand?

Love your work mate. In a parallel universe, Sonny’s could have been a true story of redemption and greatness had he not been floating with the crowd he was. Alas we will never know.

Great film. There’s no doubt about it Sonny was a great fighter with great tools. And a very mysterious man.

Johnny had one really good record (wasn't hurt by the playing of Coltrane) but his other stuff can be pretty weak and flighty. And as time passes (I just listened to JH&JC this weekend) his voice and delivery sounds a bit affected.

Frank is in another stratosphere which admittedly is only occupied by himself. Restraint, depth, phrasing, emotional power... there is no equal.

"I Just Dropped by to Say Hello" was also terrific, imo.

Thank you for the explanation Rez. You are modest; your work is already remarkable.

So now we are discussing music & Old Blue Eyes, huh? Good then.
I am not a traditionalist per se for American music classics, go more for Delta Blues & the overlapping spiritual feeling of certain tonalities, some rock, Indian, Mid Eastern, a capella...
But over the years have appreciated more & more the unique talent of Frank.

Large in spirit & feel, but infinitely nuanced, present & small in the phraseing & intonation.
This documentary "Dark Star" is an engaging look at his loves + ups & downs, including how the mob largely made him.

I cannot find the long video of him creating my very favorite of his songs, recorded in the year of my birth. It shows him singing for a select audience & commenting on his "crooning" style as he goes through various takes.

    This shall have to do.
A full orchestra was perfectly apropos for "The Voice" here.
They mirror all the restraint & depth you speak of Seamus.
Zen-like in almost embodying the pregant richness of Silence.
Lush, melancholy with world weary vocals while embracing life in an alchemy that alludes to the ineffable; an Infinite Mystery.

God Himself could not meet the challenge to do this one any better.

LOVED IT! Some of the clips earlier in his career when he had more speed were truly frightening.

Always am enlightened by your posts Eddie!!
Johnny was a black 'crooner' circa late forties to late 60's. What a voice! Suffered the same black freeze out c r a p towards fame because the white girls loved him just as much as the white 'crooners during the 50's.
    As to my moniker?
JOhnWilliamCOLtrane, I don't need to say anymore if you're a jazz lover and appreciate Coltrane's influence and music.
If you love retro instrumental jazz, coupled with a 'crooner', go to amazon and get the Coltrane-Hartman collaboration circa 62-63. The ONLY time Coltrane recorded with a vocalist. Pure mellow magic...5 stars.
If I had to take 20 CD's to another planet, this one is surely on the short list!!!
Hope that helps though we're a little off boxing here.

Oh Seamus, how can you not love the Coltrane-Hartman collaboration?? I've thrown it into the player hundreds of times falling asleep; magic! "They Say It's Wonderful", "My One and Only Love", Autumn Serenade", etc.
No 'tremolo' in his voice, unlike Mathis (who I love). And John matches him with his lyrical playing, not to mention Tyner's impeccable piano work!
Back to thread. "old blue eyes" sold Floyd out and I'll never forgive him for that.

Thanks jowcol. My mum was a big fan of Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole so I'll have a listen. I'm more of a fan of soul singers like Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrast or Otis Redding than jazz crooners - my dad's influence. But always open to suggestions especially from those with a track record for good taste.

Have you received it yet Eddie? I've 'burned' several CD's of this along with Coltrane's instrumental album "Ballads" and threw in John's "Everytime We Say Goodbye" from the "My Favorite Things" album for my friends.
It just doesn't get any better!!!
    Blessings mate!!!
    Let's get back to boxing...:)
