Many boxing fans of this generation have always wondered how would the Cuban amateur boxers perform at the pro level if given the opportunity are now seeing the results for themselves. But to the knowledgeable fans this is really nothing new as before Castro Cuba produced great boxing legends like Kid Chocolate, Mantequilla Nápoles, Kid Gavilán, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Kid Paret, Sugar Ramos, José Legra etc etc etc...

With just a small group of defectors the Cubans currently have 3 World Champions in Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Richard Abril ( like him or not he is the WBA Champ ).

While three World Champs may not sound like much, it is certainly the best the Cubans have done in the pros keeping in mind that most of the Cuban boxers are still trapped inside the Island.

Next in line is Yuriorkis Gamboa ( Interim Champ ) to possibly face Miguel Vazquez for his IBF Crown. Erislandy Lara who is ranked #1 is also very close to becoming World Champion. Fellow Cuban Angelo Santana " ranked #1 " is almost ready to challenge for a World Title and with great young and undefeated kids like Alexei Acosta " 18-0 ", Yoandris Salinas " 20-0 ", Hairon Socarras " 7-0 " and others the Cubans could grab many more World Titles very soon.

Mexico and Cuba are currently the two best Latin Countries while PR is recuperating from a very long bad slump. If the Cubans continue grabbing World Titles they could easily have 7-8 World Champs and that would be something truly great.

The Cubans were mostly known to be the best amateurs but are now being seeing in a different way. Is anyone surprised at the success of the Cubans in the pros ???

Yes. Santana our only " White Cuban " is something else. The kid is really nice as I met him and serviced his cell phone while working at Metro PCS in Miami. He is really quiet and humble but packs a great punch! Santana could easily become Cuba's first white Champion!

Solis has really let us down but his main problem has been his weight issues/injuries...

    Tremendous waste of talent ...

Been to Cuba a few times and they're great people. No surprise they produce great boxers. The first one I remember was Luis Rodriguez,a match for Emile Griffith at welter and a great middle.Pure class. Not seen much of Lara, but maybe he can do something. What would Casamayor have been like if he'd gone pro earlier?Unbelievable.Regarding Solis, obvious talent, but to me he lacks the desire to get to the very top as a pro.He seems too comfortable now if thats the word.
