There was a huge scandal concerning Rocky, Sinatra, the mafia, the KGB, loan sharking, miserliness, and several door-to-door dildo salesman, but I think it would be inappropriate to post about it here. His family may be hurt.

The article that was being referred to above alludes to the one by William Knack published in Sport's Illustrated in the early 90's and there is a truth to the fact that many of his family members were and still are offended by that piece and by anything that paints Marciano in any other light than the one in which they bathe him in which makes it extremely difficult for any biographer to compile a definitive account of the man's life for those who are in the know are either not saying or wishing to remain anonymous so as not to be blamed which makes verification difficult, I am trying my best but boy my task is often depression inducing...www.redemptionthelifeanddeathofrocky.weebly.com

 

In the '90s, I lived in an apartment building in downtown Boston. The building porter was an old man, close to 90 years old, who had been a boxer in his youth, and after that, a taxi driver for decades. One of his taxi customers was Marciano.

According to this old man, Marciano was with an attractive young woman. The cab was hired to drive to another town, out of Boston. At the end of the trip, supposedly, Marciano tried to pretend that the ride was for free. The taxi driver claims he had to get in Marciano's face verbally to make him pay the fare. In other words, Marciano was accustomed to people doing things for free, and always presumed that he would haven't have to pay for anything. The taxi driver told me that Marciano was a cheapskate with money.

As to who the woman was, the taxi driver didn't know, but he assumed that he was with Rocky for a tryst of some sort. This was after Marciano's retirement, in the '60s, while Marciano was still married.

And, this taxi driver claimed that his boxing friends from the 1950s -- guys who knew Marciano -- alleged that Marciano made racist remarks about Joe Louis immediately after beating old Joe. Supposedly the bit about Marciano crying over beating his "childhood hero" was bull**** cooked up for public relations reasons.

Is any of this true? I have no idea. It could be that the taxi driver was just jealous of Marciano's fame and privilege in life. Many people were.

 

This...I simply cannot believe. Selling dildos door to door is downright bizarre, and degrading to the salesman. In fact, I'm sure some residential customers would have called the police on him were this true.

Marciano could have done lots of easier things to make his money, including sleazy, illegal things (like sharking). That would be more sensible and less demeaning than selling dildos.

I don't think his dark side was any worse than anybody else's dark side. So he became a womaniser after his career ended.
People cheat on their spouses all the time, unfortunately...and generally they don't have women throwing themselves at them.

He distrusted banks and insisted on being paid in cash for guest appearances etc....no big deal. Does anyone trust banks?

He had a temper...so do I. So do many.

He was somewhat cheap...okay, he was a bit cheap. No big deal really.

The dildo case story...I don't know if it's ever been confirmed by reliable sources. But again, it's more funny than anything.

It's not that I think legends are above scrutiny, after all they are public figures, but Rocky, if that's the worst of it, was no worse than any other man.

I heard he was mindful of his money but i can't confirm that particular story...as for Rocky crying over beating Joe Louis it's true i've seen a photo that shows Marciano holding his hands to his eyes and crying.
