He's the housewive's favourite now. 'Our David off the telly, what a lovely young man'. That cocky, braggadocio, potty mouth schtick would probably turn off a substantial chunk of his fanbase. If we're going to credit him for anything in his career it's got to be knowing how to play the game.
Mr Nice Guy persona now in development. He upset to many people David, went a bit to far, a lot of people for whatever reason wanted to throttle him, after the Harrison fight and after the Klitschko fight. People felt robbed. People felt cheated. Then he went into the jungle and became the MILF and GILF's favorite son. Signed with Matchroom and the rest was history. Knock David Haye all you want. He can sell just as well as The Heartbreak Kid. He knows how to work it. Bad guy or good guy, whatever it takes.
Started with the celeb jungle thing. Had to redress his reputation with the general public after the Chisora stuff if he ever wanted to grace SBO again. In fairness, he couldn't have played it better.
Casual fans are stupid and easily influenced. After Price was beaten, i can specifically remember a large number of scousers tweeting David Haye to spark out Tyson Fury. David Haye wants to be the hero not the Villain. Up against Wladimir Kiltschko he became the Villain amongst casual fans, and even some British boxing fans.
Playing the media has always been natural to Haye. Shades of Ali whose transformation from villian to hero was incredible.
