Was back when he accepted the fight with Bernard Hopkins. To then Kovalev had not been really tested. For this reason, many fans believed that BHOP would pull another upset of an unproven young lion. I was one of them, and Kovalev proved me wrong. That was the day I became a Kovalev fan. Although Andre Ward defeated Kovalev last night, there is no doubt that Kovalev represented himself like a true champion and a place in the top 3 P4P ranks.
That's what I'm saying. Sergy Kovalev is world class fighter. Forget Golovkin. He don't fight nobody, but Kovalev only fights the best. After last night, I am even more a kovalev fan.
I wasn't a big fan of Kovalev before this fight but liked what I saw, he handled the post fight interview well. The man is a beast, I think he could have taken Ward out if he pressed him more but was understandably being a bit cautious, he is certainly no dum slugger and he won that fight in my eyes.
There will definitely be a rematch. When, exactly, I don't know. With Stevenson waiting in the wings, I'm sure he'd prefer to fight a unification bout Ward, rather than Kovalev. For PPV, Ward-Stevenson is probably a bigger fight than the rematch. If Ward defeats Stevenson becoming the undisputed LHW champion, the Kovalev rematch would be much bigger.
