With so few big names and personalities in the sport today, World Champs like Froch and Khan being dethroned, no rising stars to set the world stage on fire, will British boxing be irrelevant on the world stage in 2012? Add to that the end of Sky PPV, at least before they could put up these "WWE" type PPV's with Haye fighting some circus freak for £15 or one of Frank's cards. Boxing would make the papers, people would be intrigued and buy the PPV. Sky pulling the plug on PPV is bad for boxing, hype SELLS. Without that hype, without that £15 PPV, watching some no mark fight another no mark does not pleasure the majority of the usual PPV buyers. With the big paydays out of the window for any potential future up and coming DOMESTIC fighter, no Sky PPV, it'll be difficult for fighters and personalities to grow in the sport.
Haye vs. Vitali, if it happens this summer, will end up on Sky Box Office. But no, the utter dross that most Sky PPVs were was not good for boxing in this country particularly. Most of the Allegedly PPV cards had to be PPV to cover the purses of fighters like DeGale. I'm not criticisng Allegedly for that as such, maybe his investment will end up paying off long-term. But a fight like Groves/DeGale did't have a "huge PPV feel" or anything like that - the fight would have seemed a much bigger deal, in my opinion anyway, if it had been on terrestrial TV or at least Sky Sports.
With BoxNation around British Boxing will prosper.Sadly I think it will die out on Sky but hey as long as you have us you will be fine;-)
There are actually so many things wrong with your post, I am unable to bring up every point as I'm on an iPhone. But rest assure, if this thread takes off (which I dot expect it will), I will absolutely cain you tomorrow sir :good
I agree, up and coming fighters should be put on terrestrial tv, so that they are given the opportunity to become a "name", like Haye is/was. I don't know whether the Haye/Vitali fight will be on PPV, imo it should.
The only thing working against us in this world is time son. So why waste your time tomorrow on a thread or individual who may not be here tomorrow
Thank goodness for you Mr unofficial spokesman for only a tenner a month!(what I call the latest gift from the boxing gods that is boxnation):thumbsup I still get goosebumps at the thought of tuning in live to see a welshman fighting a scotsman in a neutral venue with a tiny York hall so empty, the balcony was shut off. In Frank & Eddie we trust:good Boxnation & Prizefighter? All in one go? we are truly spoiled I tell thee! wheres my wallet to fork out for both incase I miss anything?(& I dont mean you inspector)
Boxing is fine, it was fine before PPV and it'll be fine after PPV. There'll always be young, talented boxers coming through as long as there are boxing fans and gyms, kids don't start boxing because they want to make money, they start boxing because they love the sport. You can apply this principle to any sport I can think of. Ofcourse, young boxers will always dream of being the World Heavyweight Champion, but they're not dreaming about getting cheques, they're dreaming about being the best.
