I've just rewatched Scott Quigg (Quinn for all you Khan fans) simply break down Jason Booth. For all those that didnt see it, the golf in size was astonishing, and by the 5th, it was getting painful to watch. While i'm aware that Booth has boxed as low as Flyweight, that was a long time ago, and he has been fighting up at Bantam for the last 5 years.

But on saturday, there seemed to be a huge golf in size, one which gave Booth no chance IMO. And for me, that is solely down to the 24 hour weigh in. I mean, Booth looked simply huge in there, and he probably put on about a stone between the weigh-in and the ringwalk. This isnt an isolated insident. I remember Calderon being finally overwelhmed against Segura twice, with the mexican practically being two weight classes bigger than the tiny Calderon. Brandon Rios puts on a huge amount of weight after the weigh-in and seems to golf other lightweights. Ortiz weighed almost 12 stone for a Welterweight title fight against Mayweather.

So the simple question is, is this really fair?

What do this system add to boxing? While I wouldnt like to see a fighter weight drained when they enter the ring, surely if we went back to the days of morning weigh-ins, fighters would be on a much more even playing field to their opponent. Should a fighter really be punished if he cannot put on a substantial amount of weight like his opponent?

It all seems wrong to me.

the IBF have the best system in place at the minute.

they can't enter the ring any more than 10lbs over the divisional weight requirement.

Yep as HMS says the IBF at the moment is the fairest and most sensible. Quigg against Booth was a physical mismatch. It was like watching Apollo James Jackson spar John McDermott . Jason knew it was pointless throwing punches with power they was bouncing off Quigg.

Agreed. I think they should go even further, maybe take the allowance down to 5lbs.

Lets have Same Day weigh in's! 3-6 hours before the fight! Imagine the extra excitement this will cause! And it will separate the men from the boys! and force more boxers in condition all year round.

I think they should bring back same day weigh-ins. Some of the weight differences now are ridiculous. JCC Jr weighed 180 pounds for his fight vs Zbik. He should be fighting at LHW. Not sure I believe that having weigh-ins the previous day is safer either. Remember Gatti vs Gamache?

It is done for fighters safety. We don't want another Michael Watson or Gerald McClellan situation. Same day weigh ins are a bad idea but I concur that a 10lbs limit is a sensible approach

Same day I am also against it, but are most of these weigh ins really 24 hour weigh ins as they are called?

Most of them are done early afternoon the day before and the main fights are usually after 10pm so in reality for the top fights they are weighing over 32 hours before which is to much for me to rehydrate.

I can remember Nigel Benn shadow boxing in a sauna wearing a sweat suit a few hours before the weigh in for one of the Eubank fights, he's very lucky he didn't get seriously hurt in that fight. maybe a compromise to ensure it is no more than 24 hours before and they can't come in over 10lbs above?

On the other hand though a big guy having to melt off loads of weight to make the limit and then putting it back on again will be affected badly and they'll be slower. Someone like Mayweather who only walks around and fights at 150lbs will have no issues making weight and keeps the speed advantage he has over his naturally bigger opponents.

I think that we should have weigh-ins the morning of the fight. It'll build even more anticipation. Like HMS says, the IBF have the best system whereby a fighter can only add 10 pounds, but we need this to be the case across the board.

You could look at it like that but id say as high as 90% of fighters think they have an advantage and are better off boiling down and coming in much bigger and stronger at the lower weights rather than fight at a weight where they don't put much weigh back on like Mayweather and Manny.
