There's a simple solution, those who struggle to make to weight 24 hours before should move up a division.
Perhaps they should, but as has been pointed out many feel that it's worth it to have a size advantage over their opponent. I was just pointing out that there are benefits and drawbacks to doing it, I don't think it's particularly unfair personally. Booth isn't a super bantamweight, he's a bantamweight at most and intended to move to super fly not long ago.
I don't know the fight night weights but Donaire looked twice the size of Navaez on Saturday as well. I heard mutterings that he was 15-20lbs heavier on the night but I can't confirm this. I like the IBF ruling but there is always going to be weight issues in boxing. Boxers are always going to look for every advantage they can and coming in a naturally bigger man can be a huge advantage. Unfortunately, that isn't the way it always works and you can cause serious damage by draining yourself too much, a factor which i believe has led to some boxers being hurt short and long term in the ring.
they reweigh them in the morning and ensure they are not more than 10 pounds over the weight. that is the best so far.
Chris Eubank had to lose just as much weight, when he fought Benn in the first fight. But Benn was the loser, so they used this as a excuse........"Slightly" Chris Eubank had ridiculous ways of making weight.
i wasnt aware of the IBF system but seems a sensible idea. i take it if they fail the "second" weigh in the fighter cannot win the title and/or is hit by a big fine?
im shocked fighters ain't turned to using heroin. **** training hit the brown stuff lads. Bet Jim Watt used the stuff.
Same day weigh-ins won't return. They were introduced for safety reasons and seem to have worked. The rehydration limit idea seems a good one though. Fighters will always boil down, and are reluctant to move up in weight even when they are struggling. The system needs to protect them from themselves as much as anything.
Eubank said he would train and just starve himself in the final week no matter what his weight was. Crazy stuff.
He would sometimes book into a hotel, to get away from food in general. And he would ask for the staff within the hotel to remove! all bowls of fake fruit, i think sometimes he would eat fruit, this was the last food source he was aloud to eat! Up until maybe a day or two before the fight. He was a bad man... "I remember reading this, but I don't know where..? But it ALWAYS stuck in my mind"
the system is great , fighters like gatti who were some what limited in terms of skill used this as an advantage dont see the problem with it.
As soon as a fighter struggles at the weight they tell themself that they would be too small for the next weight class and lose an advantage. It's madness. Most good fighters who cut hard for the weight only seemed to improve as they moved up - Khan, Pac, Corrales, Cotto etc
