It's pretty clear that Sky see these domestic PPVs as incredibly lucrative (low risk)- Coyle/Campbell on PPV anyone?

There needs to be an insurgent figure like Haymon to shake things up in this country.

 

Brook vs Gavin is the replacement to DeGale vs Dirrel, the same as Bellew vs Cleverly replaced Brook vs whoever when unforeseen circumstances changed his plans. If DeGale vs Dirrel was headlining I would have being much happier paying 17 quid, 3 50/50 world title fights on one card, unheard of in British boxing. Unfortunately Hearn lost the purse bids so we get Brook vs Gavin which IMO is a deeply disappointing fight.

I really don't have a problem paying the PPV, it's not like it's 50 quid like in America, it's a much better card tha Bellew vs Cleverly, that really was awful. If it would have been DeGale vs Dirrel you have 3 international opponents for world title fights, much better than the endless stream of "big domestic fights" we have got since Froch vs Groves.

I touched on it yesterday with the fielding - cal smith being sent to purse bids. Won't happen, cos Eddie will be hoping they can keep world rankings & one of them pick up a title - then it's a big stadium fight between two Scousers at anfield...

He just exploits at any opportunity.

 

There is money to be made, as much as I would prefer there was no PPV fights, I don't blame him for trying to make them as often as possible.

 

People are free to buy the PPVs or not. Same with SKY sports and BoxNation subscriptions. You can pay if you want it, or keep your money for something else.

 

The PPV will be a flop but don't under estimate the stupidity of the council estate chav society

 

Let's hope McGuigan sticks to his guns and stays with ITV, to keep that connection going and thwart Eddie's PPV ambitions for Quigg. This cynical Brook scenario makes me appreciate Box Nation even more and I will be cancelling Sky after 2nd May.

Look, boxing's going the same way football, snooker and darts have gone. The Sky model raises it's profile and the athletes make more money because the pie's bigger.

The costs are borne by the pay-tv generation. It's that or boxing eventually disappears. Ultimately the market decides.

So, contrary to the thread title British boxing's re-birth has started, not its demise.

 

Rubbish, it's demise is more likely the way it's going. The average sports fan could name on one hand the active boxers they know of, it's all MMA now behind the traditional popular sports like football.



This 'pay tv generation' you speak of won't be sustainable in the long term, it's essentially greed from the promoters and broadcasters. Instead of hundreds of thousands of pounds for a fight they want millions, and get that threw gullible customers paying for their PPVs which feature frauds, mismatches and hype jobs.

 

Nobody in the UK gives a damn about MMA. It's very niche.

 

Most fight fans under the age of 25 are more clued up with MMA than boxing, of that there is no doubt. Unfortunately Boxing has been on the decline for a while to be honest.
