Great fighters like Sam Langford, Henry Armstrong, Harry Greb and Roberto Duran moved up in weight to fight bigger men. A fraud like the over-protected Gervonta Davis who fights at 135 wants to fight a much smaller man in Naoya Inoue, who started at light flyweight 108 and is fighting at super bantamweight 122.
But he never called out much smaller fighters, did he? So no. He didn't cherry-pick little guys, when he fought them they had already moved up. Not same as Davis calling out a super bantamweight who is already fighting somewhat bigger men.
Leonard started at welterweight, and had filled out to middleweight by the time Hagler fought him (and was robbed). Leonard never fought at 147 after that, had his next fight at super-middleweight. When he tried to go back to 154 several fights later, he was weight-drained - knocked down several times and badly beaten. Duran started at bantamweight, and won a world title at middleweight. Langford fought heavyweights while weighing below the middleweight limit. Greb was a middleweight who fought and beat heavyweights. Leonard was not really smaller than Hagler, at least not significantly smaller.
To be fair, Twink hasn't actually called out Inoue. He says the fight is unrealistic and that he doesn't see himself ever fighting him His Excellency wants to make it This content is protected The in ring weight difference between Twink and Inoue is roughly about 11lbs They both have identical reaches Loma is routinely fighting opponents at 135 who are not only that much heavier than him but who also often have just under a 6'' reach advantage on him too. A huge weight and a huge reach advantage is way more advantageous and difficult to overcome than just having one or the other over your opponent But 122 is like Inoue's 4th division, 5th from the one he started out from and 135 is Loma's 3rd one I hear you say That's a fair point However, it's also just as fair point to acknowledge that Inoue turned pro at 19.5 y/o whereas Loma turned pro at 25.5 y/o and had Loma turned pro at 19 y/o 135 would likely be his 5th or 6th weight class with same day weigh ins And it's also a fair point to note that Inoue has a 2'' longer reach than Loma and he rehydrates slightly more in his 4th weight class, 5th from the one he started out at, than the maximum amount Loma ever did at his 1st one FTR, I think it's ridiculous to expect Inoue to fight Twink but so many refuse to give Loma any credit for routinely fighting opponents who hold huge physical advantages on him that they deem highly unfair when other fighters are asked to give similar or even less ones away even just once sans the huge reach disadvantage or any reach disadvantage at all And if they were to lose to these much bigger fighters, and I mean even legitimately lose as opposed to being robbed, they wouldn't receive a fraction of the criticism or hate he does and they certainly wouldn't be dismissed as being ''overrated'' or ''hype jobs.'' People just can't and are often loathe to even try to be remotely fair sometimes so sometimes we got to push back
Robert Duran and Gervonta Davis should never be mentioned in the same sentence. Gervonta couldn't carry Duran's jockstrap.
Tank is really good and very entertaining. He's not fighting for legacy, and that's ok. Just enjoy his fights for what they are. His resume is actually aging pretty well.
