Gi you have something to grip which helps with maintaining positional control using sleeves and collars, better grip and leverage and also collar chokes are a factor. Tends to be a more technical development of your game

No Gi, you dont. Which means its more difficult, with a faster pace, more reliance on strength to maintain position, and with that more sweeps but maybe less sub-attempts due to the differing factors

Yes, the same techniques involved, just the application is slightly more difficult due to some of the factors Ive mentioned
A good fight to watch it Wanderllei Silva v Hidehiko Yoshida for a good no gi v gi match in MMA terms even though it's BJJ v Judo, the principles of nogi v gi are there

But as you are training in BJJ always start with a gi 1st. When you go to no gi you will have to make adoptions, but you will have the fundamental technical developement to build on

    Stoo pretty much nailed it.
Gi is a lot slower and much more technical.
Certain positions and submissions work a lot differently from gi to no-gi.

I only know his first name vic, Iv not been for about 3 month cos of injury but when I'm back I'll get it for you, you should go down to the next fundamental classes just for beginners great way to start!

Gi is a lot harder but you will find no gi all lot easy after a short amount of time training gi.

Personally I like gi more as there is a lot more to think about.

There's no room for mistakes with a gi. Your opponent can hold you tight and vice versa. There's no slipping in and out of holds due to sweat. If one is serious about learning jiujitsu as a form of self defense, gi training is the way to go.
