Manny Pacquiao is the worst example I can think where a fighter has manipulated the faults with the boxing system to forge a legacy that will get him favourably compared with the greats.

I don't have too many issues with his pre-135 career but from 135 upward it is, in my opinion, the most misleading record of any boxer in history.

He is seen as a 7? weight world champion.

In truth all he did was beat the number 3 ranked fighter (at best) at lightweight to get a paper belt. If Armstrong had only fought the number 3 lightweight on his way up through the division no one would even know about it but because of the alphabet belt he has managed to add another weight division to his total.

At 140 I don't have any problem. Hatton wasn't at his best but he was still number one ranked at the time so I count 140 as a genuine title for Manny.

At 147 there are two issues really. He won the belt off Cotto who was number 2 ranked in the division at the time. Again there is the issue of if a fighter of old had moved up to welter and fought the number 2 guy noone would care. Also the fact that he won the belt fighting at 145.
I am not one to try and feebly argue that Cotto was weight drained because there is no reason to believe that he was. The reason why I have a problem with it is because it reduced the size difference between the two. I know 2lbs is not alot but it must make a difference otherwise it wouldn't have been requested.

Now he is going to win a title at 154 against someone who presumably isnt even reanked in the top 5. On top of this he is taking the fight at 151. I don't think Marg will be weight drained but again it reduces his natural size advantage and gives the impression of Pacquiao achieving more than he has.

If this modern day system was about in the olden days I honestly believe the likes of Tommy hearns and SRR could have won belts at 147, 154, 160, 168, 175, 200 and Heavy.

I completely agree. Floyd is one of the worst examples too. I could have mentioned Oscar, and RJJ too but in my opinion Pacquiao is the very worst offender.

The only thing you can have on Pacquiao, is the whole titles thing. But if you're like me and you don't give a hoot about belts, and you're primarily concerned with quality of opposition, then you should have nothing but the upmost respect for Pacquiao and his accomplishments.

    Barrera x2
    JMM
    Morales x2
    Hatton
    Oscar
    Cotto
    Clottey
    Margarito (soon to be)

Forget titles, that's an impressive list right there. Especially when you consider the span of weight classes of the above opponents.

Cant argue with that. Its the fact people say he is the first 7 weight world champ that gets me.

Dude this **** has been rehashed over and over again. Its got one problem in even if you discount Pacs post 135 career he has arguably one of the best records around. The second problem is bitching about catchweights they happen in boxing. I mean look at SRL and the fight with Lalonde that was for the light heavyweight belt and it wasn't even fought at light heavy with a 168 weight clause. Yet no one seems to bring that up anymore. Now I'll admit that the Margo fight is bull**** not because of the catchweight which isn't going to affect either but strictly because Margo isn't a ranked jr MW. And a fighter moving up to a new weight class and beating the #2 ranked fighter as it is considered and was always considered a big deal. The standard practice is to take a weak fight to see if it fits. Hence why May fought Shambla for his first 147 fight. Fighters with few exception don't take the #1 ranked fighter at a new weight on their first attempt. The reason old people aren't remembered for it now, which is wrong many are, is because that is in the past not now. When it was happening it was heralded as impressive.

he is a 7-weight world champion, regardless on how many paperbelts are currently there in each division. He's still earned it, that you have to give him.

in that same manner that i acknowledge dlh as a 6-weight world champion and floyd as a 5-weight world champion. they have earned it regardless of the circumstances. they didn't create those paperbelts, in the first place. it's already there for the taking. :deal
