Normally i watch the boxing by myself or with the long suffering missus. Last night broke that rule and had some folk round! Never again, seriously affected my enjoyment. 'Is the undercard still on, whens the fight start' This is the earliest starting big fight i have ever seen, we stayed up till 4 to see Froch live in the UK! By all means take an interest, i'd love to have more mates interested in boxing but rewriting boxing history takes it a bit far! In an effort to prove themselves right wikipidia was used and failed. Amongst my favourites were, Lennox Lewis was a paper champion :huh and i hate Mayweather i'd give anything to have 10 mins in a ring with him! :nut I answered the Lennox one, but my misses answered the Mayweather one with the contempt it deserved. I was proud :good Anyway else doubt they could survive boxing being mainsteam?
Haha. My mate wouldn't stop talking all fight, it was like going to the cinema with a girl and having her ask what was happening every 2 seconds. Only thing was he was disputing my scoring rounds for Haye when I said Haye is landing the flashier shots and valuev was just plodding forward and he said "people who don't know what they're talking about will think they're flashier but they're not." I was pretty confused. Because he went to a boxing gym once when he was a kid and hit a punch bag a couple of times he figured he was a boxing expert
I had the same at my friends house...8 of us watching the fights from 8pm.... Had the following pearls of wisdom from 3 of the "non-boxing" fans.... "I've heard this GRAHAM Groves is quite good" (I corrected him that it was George TWICE, yet he persisted with Graham). "Floyd Mayweather is ****, I wouldnt pay to watch him" On Groves winning by points "Well that kid wont make it if he cant knock that bum out!" (At this point I used Winky Wrights "its Boxing not Knockouts" but it fell on deaf ears). Tried to explain that many journeymen are tough and that is why they are put in the ring with them etc, but no it was a thankless task. "Haye WONT fight the Klitschko's!" On this I was totally confused as to the reasoning, and I got this pearl of wisdom "Haye will fight 2 or 3 Americans next..." When I said "WHO?", I got a response of "Any Americans!!!" John Ruiz came out -- "Oh this guy is really good!!" -- Sorry I wasnt having that. And the final piece of wisdom "Nikolai Valuev is the ONLY World Champion......" I mentioned the Klit's and was told "They vacated the belts to fight for more money!!!" -- At this point I shut up and decided listening to Jim Watt was better for my sanity!!!
Another of my mates was asking about David Haye. Asked if he had ever lost, I said yes once, he said "oh, he'll lose then' I then went on to explain a bit more about the context of that loss and a bit more about his record and how his isn't the typical fight 30 bums career. He then looked at his KO ratio and suddenly decided he was amazing. I can now understand why some genuine fans of the sport dislike Calzaghe, because to people like that he looks like the greatest ever
Chubble, where the **** to people get these 'facts' from? I have friends like that who make stuff like that up about fighters and they are 100% convinced they're true. Where do the see/ read that stuff? Does it just pop into their heads?
Greg I woud never claim to know lots about boxing (you guys on here have tons of knowledge), but last night I felt like a walking BoxRec in comparison to those guys...... It just makes you laugh when the same thing was no doubt happening in pubs and houses across the country atsch Forgot this belter "Joe Calzaghe will come back and join the Super Six!!!" - When I made the point that would make it a "Super SEVEN" and that contracts were signed etc, he was adamant that Joe will come back and nobody would turn him away!!! I then said well there is a possibility that Jermain Taylor may drop out due to sick knock-out's(TRYING to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, why I dont know!!!), and one guy turned to me and said "WHO???".....thankfully at that point another round started in the Haye fight.
I really dont know. As I say I dont know everything about boxing, far from it, but when its completely ridiculous I wonder what is going on!! The problem is, these are the people who just read the sun, watch the BBC/Sky Sports News, read the BBC website etc, so have most of their info from there. This then gets twisted according to the articles they have seen!! Without SKY you see, Id say 2 or 3 of them last night wouldnt have known who Nikolai Valuev was....or maybe even David Haye. The power of the media and marketing I suppose - they can make you believe ANYTHING!!!
haha i know the feeling, like Gaz says there is some weird facts crop up. i once got asked if Ricky Hatton was figthing the other Heavyweight Champs
I went down my local to watch with mates last night. I got there about 7pm, realized I was going to get mithered and have listen to a lot of dumb opinions from people who know **** all about boxing so I buggered off back home at 8 and watched it on my own. Good move. Ironically after the fight I went on the General Forum and listened to a lot of dumb opinions from people who know **** all about boxing. Bad move.
Was talking to a fella in work about the Valuev / Haye fight on Friday. Both saying we were looking forward to it. After a few minutes i started talking about the Sexton / Rogan fight that night. Saying that i was looking forward to it. He simply stared at me. Had no idea what i was on about.
ha ha ,some of that stuff is well funny lads. i too had some of my friends round last night ,or "half-fans" as i like to refer to them. one of my mates (a u.f.c fan!) was saying "that russian giant is going to knock haye out in the first round, you watch,it aint gonna last past one,one punch knockout, his fists are too big(one of my favourites that one),",then i said to him "have you ever seen either of them fight?"--then there was a five minute pause ,a bit of stuttering and lots of "no,,,,,,,,,,but,,,,and,,,,,,umm".then he said "alright then,i'll put a tenner on it with you, haye will get knocked out in the first couple of rounds",,,,not even valuev would win but he would in the first few rounds!!,,,,i had to take his bet, easy money!. it's a strange thing with my half-fans and a stella or two,but they love to bet on boxers they have never seen before!!.it payed for some of the fight fee though.:good
Never understood why people get like that....If I dont know who it was, Id just say "Oh who's that?" and OWN UP to not knowing too much about boxing, but look to take an interest!!!! Instead you get the blank looks and then some ridiculous fact is made up about the Haye fight!!!
