    Edwin Valero

EDWIN “El Inca” VALERO (25-0, 25 KOs)...
World championship fights: 6-0, 6 KOs...
    WBC lightweight world champion...
Former WBA super featherweight world champion, four successful defenses...
At the age of 27, Edwin is a six-year pro. The WBC lightweight world champion – naturally lefthanded - he won the vacant title in his last fight on April 4.

He is also a former WBA super featherweight world champion. He won the title in August, 2006, and made four successful title defenses. He vacated the title to move up in weight.

Edwin was under contract to Tokyo-based Teiken Promotions from 2006 to 2008. He lived in Tokyo during that time, and four of his last seven fights were in Japan.

He is coming off a seventh-round TKO win against Antonio Pitalua in his last fight in April, 2008. It was Edwin’s first fight in the U.S. since December, 2003.

Edwin has made several changes in the last year. He signed a promotional contract with Top Rank; he is now living in southern California; he fought for the first time at 135 pounds in his last fight, which was also his first fight with new trainer Robert Alcazar.

Edwin said he is also making changes to his style, as well.

Manager Jose Castillo said, “I’ve known Robert for a long time. We just don’t want Edwin to get involved in those wild, crazy exchanges anymore. Robert has a new game plan. He is going to work on Edwin’s footwork, control his distance and instruct him to use his jab more.”

Edwin said through an intepreter, “It was beginning to be a tremendous sacrifice for me to make 130 pounds. That’s why I vacated the WBA belt. I feel that I’m faster and stronger at lightweight.

“I met Robert Alcazar him in 2003 and I wanted to work with him then, but I couldn’t. That was when my license was taken away in the United States.

“When they took my license away, I didn’t fight for a year and a half. But I wasn’t going to stay and wait. I knew I had to do something, so I went to Argentina and fought there. The organizers of the event were the WBA, and they suggested that I should talk to this promoter in Japan. I did, and I went to Japan, and they looked at me and liked me and I signed with them.

“I have a plan to fight the best boxers, Pacquiao, Marquez or whoever, and I think Robert Alcazar is the best trainer for me at this time. I’m a naturally aggressive fighter, but Robert can help me get better. He is having me focus on the most important things - he has me using my jab a lot and using my legs. The jab is the most important thing – I’ve been working on it a lot, and it is better than it has ever been before. I can see the results of working with him. But I’m a puncher and I’ll always be a puncher. If I can get the fights over early, I will.

“I’d just like the people to know that I think I’m very capable of beating Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao has shown his worth against a lot of good righthanders, but I don’t think he can beat a good lefthander, especially one with power like I have. My dream is to one day fight him in Las Vegas. I do hope that I get the chance to fight him one day.”

Edwin started his career with 18 consecutive first-round knockouts. After fighting eight times in his native Venezuela, he moved to California in 2003 and fought there three times, with one fight in Venezuela in between.

i know you believe it in your heart, because if you had a brain, you would believe in your mind.

but sadly, what does man without a brain do?

    cling to his heart. :|:|:|
