its very likely that cotto and margarito will both inflict big time damage to each other.. both are heavy punchers and both are tough as nails as well.. i'd give cotto the edge though, as what i've seen in his fight with torres. The guy's really tough and remain composed even when badly hurt. One thing's for sure, this will surely be a war and a grand show of fireworks all the way to the finish!
The effect is whoever gets their hand raised at the end of the fight is THE TOP DOGG of THE TOP DIVISION in boxing right now
Cotto will go to the hospital with a cut maybe. Margarito will go to the hospital with bruised and broken ribs and a broken facial structure, concussion and possible permanent effects. Not elusive, not slick, not afraid to get hit and a great chin = A person that should never fight an offensive animal like Miguel Cotto. Plain and Simple, Margarito is gonna get beaten very very badly.
He's tall and long, but he doesn't have the boxing ability; in terms of skill, talent, or speed of a Shane Mosley or a Floyd Mayweather, what would be needed to outbox Miguel Cotto. He has a propensity to stand and fire lots of punches at somebody, but not all of them have very much on them. He swamps people, and a lot of the time comes forward punching. Cotto's defense is good enough and his ability to counter is sharp enough that he'll be able to counter Margarito with the harder, cleaner shots; bust him up, and begin to discourage Margarito from coming forward. I also expect Margarito's volume to drop drastically after he eats a few body punches from Cotto; and there goes another one of his primary weapons. Once his volume is gone and he's been busted up, he'll be reduced to walking forward trying to tag Cotto clean, to land a Sunday punch that will turn the fight. When he does that, it will become easier for Cotto to see what's coming and either block it, avoid it, and then counter the punch, until Margarito is on the back foot. And once he's there it will be a matter of time before Cotto finally traps him and puts him down with a barrage a;ong the ropes, I expect. But who knows, I've been wrong before.
IMHO Cotto has never had trouble with boxers or tactical chessmatch kind of fights. The only times I have seen Cotto in trouble or out of his element is when the opponent is brawling and/or coming forward incessantly throwing and throwing. It's under pressure and constant fire that Cotto has been at his worst. Cotto is also a very moderate fighter defensively from what I've seen. I feel exactly the opposite. I see this as a horrible style matchup for Cotto. I hope you're right though. Cotto's defense and ability to box succesfully and counterpunch effectively depend very heavily on this being an entertaining fight. If he can't hold Margarito off this will be a stinker and a blowout.
I've seen a lot of improvements in Cotto of late. I remember the time I've seen him worst hurt; aside from him and Torres beating the **** out of each other, was when Chop Chop Corley tagged him. But against Mosley he showed very good movement and defense, I thought. Someone like Margarito who walks forward is exactly what Cotto needs, because it takes away Margarito's height advantage and rapidly closes the distance so that they're in Cotto's range. And Margarito doesn't strike me as a one-shot puncher that can suddenly hurt Cotto, he needs to land a lot and exhaust his opponents a lot of the time.
very good post. cotto does have more on the line than margarito - this is a dream fight for him. but i think it's premature to talk about a "shorter peak", simply because cotto (in particular) has only really come to the fore in recent years. people seem to forget the quality of opposition floyd took on at lighter weights, and they do that because it wasn't high profile at the time. agreed, lighter weight opposition doesn't generally damage the body as much, but the truth is cotto has only really stepped on the gas with torres... however, cotto's resume since then has been pretty formidable. a lot more than margarito's. corrales and castillo were top fighters at light but neither, in truth, were very smart fighters. they were basically talented fighters with very good power for their weight and that's all. and they will be remembered foremost for the fight thy had against each other, and second because they fought floyd.
