Oh the humiliation :-( Sena Agbeko (and even worse, Chris Colbert) had to suffer a KNOCK OUT on the final airing of a Showtime boxing event. Anyway... December 16th, 2023. It's been a good run, Showtime. i'll miss it.
So whats left on cable? Just ESPN occasionally, and fox? I get the feeling fox is going to stop boxing also. When was the last time fox had a fight on?
Obviously Jim Gray is never short of a job. Anyone know what's happening with Al Bernstein, Steve Farhood?
Happy its over. Looking forward to demise or at least significant restructuring of PBC. Hiding their top fighters for entire careers...pathetic. Thurman lost to geriatric Pac after ducking Crawford and Spence for years. Spence ducking Crawford for years. Danny Garcia ducking Crawford for years. Porter fought Crawford when it suited Porter. Tank Davis still hasnt fought anyone and probably shouldve lost or at least drew w Pitbull...and ofc wont rematch lol. Wilder was only person to challenge anyone and the Fury selection was a cherrypick gone wrong. Benavidez is currently the only PBC fighter whose trying (allegedly) to fight everyone. Talk is cheap though so we'll see
Fox is terrestrial network television, not cable. (Fox Sports is basic cable, as is all of ESPN's family of channels) Before digital & streaming changed the landscape in the last decade or so, if you owned a television but didn't pay for cable you had the original Big 3 over-the-air broadcasters - ABC, NBC, and CBS - along with Fox which joined in the 1980s, and then a couple of different upstart networks (WB & UPN) that eventually merged to become the CW. And of course, PBS. Fox is sort of like the WBO if you think of CBS/ABC/NBC as the WBA/WBC/IBF. With both HBO and Showtime bowing out, there are no more premium cable providers left in the boxing game.
Just recently, the first part of the year, pbc was on fox sports even more than showtime. but suddenly i don't see anything. I remember hearing something about Fox sports hit their limit for the year, but maybe they are pulling out like showtime. I hope not.
Boxing (and I think specifically Haymon's stuff with PBC, yeah) was on both mainline non-cable Fox and basic cable Fox Sports in recent years. More commonly the latter. I doubt we'll be seeing any boxing on Fox networks if there's an exclusive rights deal in place with Amazon Prime now.
You can still buy a digital receiver and get those channels for free in HD as long as you are within reach of the signal. It's the closest to live TV as you can get, as it's a solid 15-20 seconds ahead of streaming services like YouTube TV.
Crawford resigned with Top Rank in September of 2018, the same month and year Wilder v Fury 1 was announced. If Crawford sees that PBC would risk their fighters against other promo companies what's it matter who Bud signs with? As it turned out Wilder would be the only exception in PBC operations as nearly every other fighter only fought in-house. Which is funny because Floyd always whined about Top Rank only doing in-house fights when PBC is doing the exact same thing. Anyway, Thurman and Spence literally teased and taunted Crawford like it was some highschool football game about "being on other side of the street". Danny Garcia passed up on a career high payday in 2019 for $3m + PPV to instead fight Granados for $1m flat...a fight that did absolutely nothing for his career. Thurman famously demanded $10m to fight Crawford despite Thurman only getting $2.5m to fight Pacman. PBC WWs (and most of their fighters in general) hide behind their promotional banner. Look at the way Tank has avoided....anyone. Literally, anyone. Thurman has fought nobody but Porter and Garcia and then Haymon even tried to serve up old Manny but ATG Pac shut that down quickly. So, yes, Crawford couldve signed w PBC. It turned out better that he didn't as he pounced on Spence like the ATG he is. And he gets the last laugh with that whole promo banner...in terms of legacy and success as well as finances...as Crawford rumored to STILL be in the running for Canelo.
