I think the OP may be right. If Ward beats Kovalev, which he obviously has the skills to do, that would set up a huge unification bout with A. Stevenson. Should the promoters get it done and Stevenson takes the fight, Ward has the skills to defeat him as well. At this point he would be the undisputed, undefeated LHW champ and he would have a great argument for being P4P #1. I'm not even a huge fan of Ward, but it's apparent that he has the ability to do this.

If he gets past Kovalev he'd already be the #1 in most eyes, because I see it as the fight to determine the new #1.
But if Ward wins, it's very unlikely the fight against the pimp happens. Because Al and Jay-Z don't exactly get along, to put it mildly.
Also Ward has shown that after winning a big prize he's not really the guy to follow it up and take chances after.

 

Well said. I am not sure he would obtain the #1 position with the win over Kov in the eyes of the public, but in my eyes he would. I agree that Adonis will run from him should Ward win. That's a safe bet. His promoter knows what's good. As far as the big prize, Ward lacks the personality of a Mayweather. He may be an awesome fighter, but he will never bring in the numbers with his personality.
