I watched loads of Don Curry the other day, a tremendous fighter who deserves a mention in here.

****, didn't see that on first read, and was just about to say 'we have McCallum and Starling so will need to do Honeyghan, Curry, Nunn, Sumbu, Kalule and a whole host of other 80's fighters' but then thought better of it as we're seemingly taking on a mission already...maybe we should work down through the era's between 147-160 for a while....could be fun?

But then I saw that about Don. Yeah, he was brilliant, for a time.

Edited the post after I forgot I was researching Curry the other day:good

All the 90s heavyweights are done, apart from one notable exception (cough cough)

Curry needs a mention but I'm up for the 90s/early 2000s 147-160 era starting with Quartey, in fact I might do Ike tonight. Had a look through the thread & Tito doesnt have an entry so far.

    I know, I KNOW!!!!

Lennox is such a daunting task though. Good cases have been made for Evander and Tyson already, and now I gotta' do the greatest of all three?!?

Okay, I'll try and get started soon.

I'll take Forrest for starters then, assuming I have some footage to upload and make it interesting, not a huge amount on the tube :good

Thats the problem with Tito, Don King keeps removing his fights from youtube

No rush with Lennox, we all know Holy was the greatest & he's been done ;)

    Ike "Bazooka" Quartey
    WBA Welterweight Champion 1994-1998

    Born: 27/11/1969, Accra, Ghana
    Professional record: 37(31)-4(0)-1
    Height: 5'8
    Reach: 71"

Ike Quartey is one the greatest ever African boxers, a teak tough Ghanaian with perhaps the hardest jab in boxing history. Avoided by many & the victim of some terrible decisions Quartey still had a very good career & has done very well for himself outside of the ring as well.

Ike had an amateur record of 50-4 & represented Ghana at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. After winning national & regional titles he began fighting in Europe, mostly in France. In this fight early on in his career against another novice Ike drops him with a straight right & then literally cuts him in half with an extremely painful looking bodyshot.

Facing another prospect Rivera (11-0) a young Ike looks light on his feet & very mobile, dropping him twice on his way to a points win over 10 rounds. I dont know how he climbed up after eating this bomb & took Ike the distance for the 1st time in his career.

In 1994 Ike got his title shot & it was against one of the most unusual looking fighters I have ever seen, Belfast-based Venezuelan Crisanto "Claws" Espana. Claws was tall for the division with long arms & an enormous back & chest, he was 30-0 & had won the WBA title by knocking out Meldrick Taylor 2 years earlier.

Espana-Quartey really is a tremendous fight, a great clash of styles. Ike got the better of most of the exchanges, landing some beautiful counters & shaking off some heavy punches. In the 11th Ike stunned Claws with a big right hand & a few moments later viciously knocked him out, if you only watch one fight from this post please watch this. One of the 3 judges had Ike well ahead (as did I) but another had it level & the 3rd had Espana winning, bad scorcards would plague Ike for the rest of his career.

After stopping the veteran Argentinian, Cortes in his 1st defense, for his 2nd he took on the insanely brave Korean, Park on his US tv debut. It was an absolute massacre & the faint-hearted shouldnt watch. Ike was very effective on the inside, landing hard counters but the fight is the most impressive & destructive display of jabbing, again & again Ike's bazooka jab crunches into Park who was left with career ending facial injuries.

In 1996 in his next fight in the States Ike took on the highly rated & hard hitting Vince Phillips (33-1). Once again Quartey looked awesome, Phillips threw everything but the kitchen sink at Ike who didnt even flinch before battering Vince around the ring & winning in the 3rd round.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hIYu9RypwY&feature=related[/ame]

Next up was another American, the tough contender Oba Carr (39-1) whose only loss was in the 8th round of his previous title shot against Felix Trinidad. Quartey gave him an absolute pasting but was bizarrely deducted a point for a non-existant holding behind the head foul. He also touched a glove after slipping & was given an 8 count. Carr rallied well towards the end of the fight as Ike took his foot of the gas but the decision was announced as MD with one judge scoring the fight even.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aavkGcguxdQ[/ame]

Quartey was desperate for a superfight against Trinidad or DeLaHoya but was avoided/ducked by both men's management, he was just too dangerous & too good for his own good. He negotiated a fight with Whitaker but Pernell had to enter rehab for a drug problem & withdrew from negotiations.

In 1997 in his 7th & final defense Quartey took on the rugged Mexican Jose Luis Lopez (40-3-1). The former WBO champion was the 1st man Quartey faced who seemed able to take Ike's formidable jab, despite having his head repeatedly rocked back he kept on chugging forward.

Although he touched a glove in the 2nd Quartey was well in control of the fight until in the 11th Lopez landed a flush combination & knocked Ike down, the 1st proper knockdown of his career. The teak tough Quartey just hopped back up & although hurt he carried on fighting & at the final bell was confident of victory. The judges awarded him a MD which was incorrectly tallied & later changed to a draw.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=280GoVIEuvg[/ame]

Angry at the decision & fustrated at being able to land a mega-fight Quartey was inactive for over a year & he was stripped of his WBA title. Then in 1999 Ike finally got the big fight he had waited years for, WBC champ Oscar DeLaHoya. Quartey started strongly against a nervous looking Oscar but the fight really exploded into action in the 6th, Ike was knocked down when off balance but bounced back up & put Oscar down with a left hook moments later. Quartey remained in control & eased off but in the 12th he was genuinely hurt & backed up by a fired-up Oscar. I had Ike winning 8-4 but the Golden Boy was awarded a split-decision.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVpzwmsiINg&feature=related[/ame]

A little over a year later Quartey took on the young, unbeaten IBF light-middleweight champion Fernando Vargas 18-0. In a tough & competitve fight Ike landed the accurate, quality punches but Vargas won the judges favour with his high-energy output. Disgusted with the sport & its politics Quartey retired.

In 2005 Quartey made a comeback, winning several fights before facing former champ Vernon Forrest in an eliminator for the WBC 154lb title. Forrest was also on the comeback trail after his devastating losses against Mayorga. Quartey bossed the fight & won at least 7 out of the 10 rounds but once again he was robbed by the judges.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRItY11czbY[/ame]

In his final fight in 2006 a faded Quartey was outworked & outlanded by the excellent Winky Wright, the only decisive loss in an incredible career. He was the WBA welterweight champion for 4 years & defended his title 7 times.
