    The Fab Four. 2017 Conversation

When people mention the Fab four in boxing, it is often thought of as past greats Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran.

Im mentioning the recent Fab four who are now at the end of their careers/retired and I would guess certs for the HOF.
    Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto and Mosely.
They all fought each other in great match ups.

All greats who won world titles in different divisions.

Sometimes I dont think we appreciate the greats until after they have gone

Hmm. The next generation will be Joshua, Wilder, Parker, Fury (maybe). I see your point.

Actually, having said that, cruiserweight looks good for the next batch.

I'll tell you one thing. Every single one of those chaps (and every welterweight from the last 20 years) would **** a brick if a fully trained and motivated Jose Luis Lopez rolled into town calling out their names.

Don't think Mayweather, Pacquiao, DLH or Mosley are the fab 4 of recent years. First of all Mayweather never fought a great fighter in their prime. Which is pretty much the opposite of how Hearns, Hagler, Duran and Leonard did things. Pacquiao fought DLH when he was a shell. Mayweather fought Pacquiao when Pac looked nothing like the prime Pac. Mayweather and Pac also fought an old Mosley.

The only guys you talk about who matched up at the right time were Mosley and DLH.

So no, Mayweather, Pacquiao, DLH and Mosley were not the fab 4. Morales, Marquez, Barrera and Pacquiao looked much more like a true fab 4.

Terrible comparison. Mayweather is Leonard and Pacquiao is Duran but Cotto and Mosley weren't anything. They weren't even great in their own time. You could have gone with Martinez or GGG for Hagler, or... just read the last comment. Yes, the great fight combo in the 2000s was Pacquiao, Marquez, Morales, and Barrera. You see, now that's a good comparison!

I would think that a fab 4 isn't just having talent. It's combination of things. Great talent, entertaining fights, tactical fights, wars, fights at the right time, etc. You can't just take 4 once great fighters who fought each other and just slap a fab 4 label on them. It's a lofty standard considering what the 80s fab 4 gave us.

Between Mosley, Pacquiao, DLH, Cotto and Mayweather they amounted to 1 good, but not even great fight. Which was the first Mosley and DLH fight.

And then you could argue that Hagler Hearns and Morales Barrera I are the two greatest fights ever recorded on TV.

And why the OP put Cotto in there instead of DLH is weird. Cotto's not a great fighter.

You raise a great question but not a great answer to it, at least in my humble opinion.

If there is a Fab 4 involving Pacquiao surely it has to contain the name Marquez?

It is a sign of the times that no group of high level current day fighters have really fought each other in the almost round robin fashion Leonard, Haggler, Hearns and Duran did.

In total, there were 9 fights involving the 4 and all 4 fought the other 3 at least once. Some of those contests were legendary. In fact few weren't.

Yep, don't think any of those four will be. That was my point.

Duran was out of Pac`s class and was far harder to hit.

From a H2H standpoint yea Duran's skills clearly outclass Pacquiao, but that's to be expected since Duran is arguably (IMO) the most skilled fighter of the Television era. But Pacquiao is without a doubt the greatest fighter of his time, (8 weight division champ seals it) as Duran was in his.

Joshua has a long way to go before he can be considered a great.

Another stupid post, Mayweather is by far the best fighter of this division, he's the Sugar Ray Robinson of this era. Pac would be one of his beaten opponents.

The thing about the fab 4 is they were more than just a collection of talent. They fought the best at their best. And gave us entertaining fights that can watched on loop all day long. Mayweather never did that.
