i duran resume i would also put his win over castro in consideration. duran was 45years old and 30lbs past his best weight. castro (former wba middleweight champion) was still very much in his prime.
I agree, it's one of his most overlooked wins. I don't think it's quite top 5 worthy, but given the circumstances I would probably put it at #6.
I think it's better than both. Duran IMO had not yet reached his absolute peak and for the most part dominated (it was competitive, but not really close) a true Hall of Fame worthy and great fighter. I also think I would rate Palomino higher than the Moore win. Duran was right in his prime for this fight unlike the fight against Moore, but Palamino was a more proven fighter than Moore and Duran basically scored a shutout. Each win is of roughly equal value though, dominant showings against good fighters above his best weight, and in the case of the Moore fight past his prime. I wouldn't really argue with the Moore win being over the Palomino win, but I think beating Buchanan was better than both personally.
Hearns: 1. Cuevas: a huge test against a man regarded as one of the best pfp in the game, with a reputation for having an iron chin shattetered by pulverising right hands. 2. Hill. A great achievement over a fighter who looked like he was going to reign by fighting at home for about 20 years. Tommy outskilled an extremely tricky operator. 3. Duran: a great win of course, against a born-again legend, however, I think Tommy always had the style to beat Duran whenever they fought. Still a great win. 4. Roldan: Hearns proved his could outpunch a middleweight a fully-established middleweight and become the first fout time champion(for what that was worth). 5. Benitez: Wilfred too inconsistent for me for this win to be regarded any higher. Still, very good nonetheless. I don't see how this has appeared in the top two to be honest.
I'd have Shuler definitely as one of Tommy's top 5 wins, probably at number 5. As you said it was an amazing performance and one in which Tommy never looked better IMO. His speed, combinations, body punching, jab and POWER were all there for everyone to see. 1) Duran 2) Cuevas 3) Benitez 4) Hill 5) Shuler
Not before Hearns he wasn't. He'd been beaten but once in 46 fights (SRL mind), a superb record. He'd came back from the loss to win half a dozen, including an absolute schooling of Duran. Benitez was considered P4P about top 5 from memory, and was certainly the betting fave over Hearns. Post Hearns is a different matter, Benitez showed little fire and was beaten easily later by Hamsho. As a matter of fact i don't think he put in a single good performance post Hearns.
1. Leonard I, W15. 2. De Jesus III, TKO12. 3. Barkley, W12. 4. Buchanan, TKO13. 5. Palamino, W10. Everyone happy now? I certainly ****in hope so.
I'm never touche. However, people were touche with my initial choices. I did laugh afterall. Yes, as McGrain says "I consistently have the best avatars around here"
He was just as highly regarded as Cuevas, if not more so you know :yep As a matter of fact i think Hearns was the narrow fave or close to even's for Pip? Granted the Cuevas fight was a lot more destructive. I might look at 3.
