When I first watched all four I was not impressed with Duran. He was too raw and crude on the eye IMO at the time. Only when I read about him did it open my eyes. I was clearly missing something. His defense for one was something I needed to check out as he was his ring generalship and overall smartness as a fighter. I began to appreciate him the more I watched him. His ability to take the sting out of punches upon impact is mightly impressive. Against Leonard in their first fight and then against Hagler this was evident. While Duran was ferocious and untidy at times he had that bit of intelligence to make his moves look sweeter than they were. Duran needs to be studied carefeully to be truely appreciated. He's not quite the headless chicken of a bull people see at the best of times.
Everything you're saying seems really convenient. Hearns wasn't an all time great fighter until after he was beat by Leonard? Ray's victory over Duran isn't great because Duran was overweight, and in the second fight he was 38 years of age? True, but he would also carry on for a further 10 years, and Ray wasn't no spring chicken either. I'll agree with you on the Benitez stoppage. It was early but I have no idea what you're talking about in terms of LaLonde. Ray knocked him out good and proper. Regardless, up until the stoppage, Benitez was way behind on the cards. It's obvious that you're just a Ray Leonard hater, so rather than carry on this pointless discussion, I'll move on. It boggles my mind that so-called boxing fans don't apreciate fighters that had everything, and Ray did.
The way I see it, SRL was the best boxer of the bunch and Duran the best fighter. Both Duran and Hagler were warrior types while Hearns had the most p4p power, and probably the most natural advantages at his weight. All were very elite fighters IMO.
1. Roberto duran. Leaving aside his dominant and savage reign at 135 when in his best weight and youth,we have the truely great spectacles of a 135 man humbling the great ray leonard, marvin hagler and barkley. These three performances alone show me that duran is without question the p4p no1 of these four....If all the fab four were 135 ers prime duran would run all of them out of the ring... 2. Joint second goes to ray and tommy. Ray for the fact he beat all of the three, his performances against all of the three were also all great...His win against hagler is sensational, and his resume is second to none in terms of condensed quality. Tommy was just the most gifted and beautiful fighter you could ever wish to see, very rarely do you see a world class boxer get destroyed by another, but tommy made a career of this with crushing wins against cuevas, duran, roldan. To mention nothing of his never being outboxed by anyone. 4. Hagler, though an atg middle i think hagler p4p is on a lesser level than these guys in talent, but his granite chin and all round game made him a tremendous competitor. His win against hearns truely unique and awesome.
