The Facts: Joe Calzaghe vs. Carl Froch

Higher ATG??

Calzaghe is an ATG now?

 

If Froch were to win this tournament Calzaghe would be tempted back to fight him.
Now that would be pretty special.

 

Calzaghes US debut came against Hopkins not Lacy in his second from last fight. For me the five fights Froch has had on the spin, beats hands down, any five fight period in Joe's career. Infact i honestly don't believe Joe fought five fighters of this level throughout his whole career.
I know this may upset a few people, but being realistic Joe is not an ATG. He was a good champion who had 2 very good performances against a fine fighter in Kessler and the overmatched Lacy. Also to say he dominated the super-middle division for over a decade is simply not true. He was the WBO belt holder, defending against WBO ranked opponents for the most part(Tocker Pudwill), until he had supposedly his big unification bout with Lacy.
So yeah while Joe was a good champion, he certainly is'nt an ATG. If he stayed undefeated fighting better opposition, then i would say he was.
I hope no one mentions the old, weight drained version of Eubank he fought to make his credentials appear better.

Taylor already was in the STEEP decline when Froch got to him.

Hopkins still beat Pavlik way after the Taylor fights. And the Taylor fights, everybody knew Hopkins was weight draining himself to make 160. The man's bigger than Calzaghe FFS.

 

Stop it with the Tocker Pudwill. He was just a replacement opponent for Thomas Tate. Hopkins Calzaghe fought would have beat the crap out of the Abraham that Froch dominated. No one in Froch's record would have beaten Calzaghe H2H.

 

At this stage they are incomparible. Lets see how the next few years go. But Kessler who JC beat clearly, clearly beat Froch. Yeah i know styles make fights..but Joe got past Kessler on way to retiring with his unblemished record. Froch (whom i'm a fan of!) lost his fight and IMO when I watched him v Kessler I didnt think it was even close). So for me JC is way way above Froch at the moment. But lets see what Carl can do in the coming few years. Nobody can deny the man is a great fighter - who loves to fight..and actually showed boxing skills last night that many thought he didnt possess!:hey

 

JC is the most over rated fighter of all time (by his fans) only solid win is against a prime Bika . . . everything else is garbage. Like someone said earlier; silly question Cobra all the way baby! LOL

 

That would be nice. I don't think it happens though. It think it would be counterintuitive for JC. He willl have been retired for 3 plus years or so at that point. He wasn't one to take alot of risks when he was active, and he prizes his "0" far too much to gamble it now IMO. That being said, I think he beats Froch even now(if he can make weight right and hasn't lost too much).

 

If you're comparing them at 33 then why have you listed Calzaghe fights that all happened when he was 34 or older?

The thing is mate, every one of Froch's last five fights has been on a plate for him. Pascal was the next best ranked guy to contest the VACANT WBC title. Who was Pascal at the time? Without the Dawson win Pascal would have very little credibilty.

Taylor was Froch's mandatory defence, but fair play to him for going over to the US. Yet Taylor is only a name, he is not the great fighter people make him out to be.

As for Dirrell, Abraham and Kessler these fights were made by Showtime and the Super Six. Nogotiations for these fights were straight-forward and simple: the fights were made well in advance of each other.

Who should Calzaghe have fought, that you suggest that he ducked. For me Calzaghe should have fought 4 fighters; 2 would not fight him and the other 2 is 50/50 but all sides have there criticisms.

 

But then you could say that if Pascal beats Hopkins it adds to Froch's resume.

 

hahah. lol. But true. I honestly think Calzaghe would come back If Froch wins this tournament.

Calzaghe is in my opinion one of the most underated fighters. And was throughout his whole career.

 

Froch is everything Calzaghe was not in terms of spirit and the fact the guy will fight anyone pretty much anywhere at any point of there career !!!

Calzaghe was everything Froch is not in terms of boxing ability !!!!

IMHO Froch gets the nod on resume's , still doesnt take anything away from the fact Joe would of demolished the man :deal
