Lets discuss its failures, hopefully things that could be changed if we get to see another tournament in the future. 1) Have cometition doctors, no doctor Shaw-Hi's 2) Have equal amount of home and away fights for each fighter (this is where the Ward fans shout ''froch should have got a better deal'', but its beside the point in terms of fairnes) 3) Fighters being gifted points when an opponent withdraws...but the other fighter (in this case Froch) still having to fight for his points any others?
The bottle jobs should be punished. Banned from challenging for the abc & Ring titles for 2 years or something.
Failing to gather the real top ranked Smw at the time. The real S6: 1.Mikkel Kessler 2.Lucian Bute 3.Carl Froch 4.Sakio Bika 5.Jermain Taylor 6.Librado Andrade
I didn't like that Bute was lobbied against by the Forch and Ward camps while Johnson and Green were considered proper replacements. Bute held the IBF title since well before the S6 and it should have been up for grabs the minute Lucian cleared his HBO contract.....Interbox has always maintained that they would copromote any of the fights had he been included as a replacement if allowed. Why Froch and Ward's camps lobbied against him is beyond me, but I guess it was best for them as a draw in this w/e's fight will leave them both with their perspective belts and build up a rematch all the while continuing to duck BOOTAYE!:deal
Problem is only one US citizen, who's over the hill and wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell in this field. ShoTime is an American network. They needed American prospects in there for the US public. Certainly Green was a total bust (like expected)... But he is American and Johnson lives in the states. Not so hard to figure out really :bart
The overwhelming problem of the tournament was it's lenght. This calls for a cut-down in numbers of participants to 4. The major benefit of the tournament and the ONLY reason why it got made in the first place, was the 3 guaranteed fights. So that parameter has to be there in a new format. So in concluding the next tournament should be a super4 with 3 guaranteed fights, a pointssystem as the s6 and homefield to be determined by coin-toss. No fighter can have 3 homefights.
I am a Bute fan but I feel that both parties (Bute's camp & SHO) didn't want any part of each other in this. It wasn't only SHO. Bute needed to rematch Andrade to get rid of the chip on his shoulder and thought he will be better with HBO. They misscalculated the importance of the tournament in the eyes of boxing fans. In the meantime Showtime thought that not inviting Bute won't be such a big deal. Both parties were wrong and tried to correct that by the contract signed between them last year.
Coming back to the question. The biggest fail of the S6: leaving the SMW division dry on the long run. We'll be forced to watch only prospects or MW that decide to go up. The others that are still active now are only bums, cans and taxi drivers (not my words).
That's ridiculous. The tournament gave an endless stream of exiting pairings that there's no way we would have gotten without it. Now that it's about to end, there's STILL lots of great matchups waiting to happen. Furthermore the s6 fighters has gained worldwide recognition, that will benefit the entire division in a long time to come.
IMO this are the fights meaningful fights at SMW that can be made: Bute vs. Ward Bute vs. Froch Froch vs. Kessler II Kessler vs. Bute .... So 4 interesting fights, from which 3 aren't the merit of S6. The rest will all happen at LHW. Only one name still left that is kind of an enigma: Bika. Thanks mostly to S6: 1) Johnson is older than Santa Claus 2) Abraham is a joke 3) Dirrell is a **** and a facker 4) Taylor is 100% shot 5) Green isn't even a gatekeeper The amount of recognition the SMW recieved after the S6 is the same as before. It's just that now it's not that widely distributed but it's directed mostly on 3 or 4 fighters.
The s6 made Ward and Froch stars. Plenty more exiting fights are waiting if you can look beside your man crush on Bute. We've got quite a few up and commers that will get a chance to make a name for themselves by fighting the supersixers (DeGale, Groves, Quillin etc.) and I disagree on your take regarding the fights taking place at 175. I think that Ward might move up in a year or 2. Bute perhaps before that as he struggles mightily at the 168. Kessler and Froch will surely stay.
Have 4 or 8 boxers, not 6. the tournament would actually be faster with 8 and you'd be less likely to get withdrawals.
