I was just talking to my brother about boxing in general and I noticed that is the saying "the faster they rise the harder they fall" true? Tyson = he became a superstar over night and was almost invincible in the begining of his career but at the end joeys were whooping his ass and the tables totally turned on him. kelly pavlik = super star after beating taylor, ordinary after getting beaten by hopkins. leonard, chavez, hitman, etc all hit super stardom and then got beaten by far lesser fighters at the end of the careers ######## But on the other hand the fighters that struggle and scrape there way to the top, stay on top almost for ever Hopkins = took years to get recognition and still on top Calzaghe = took years to get recognition and still on top vitali, wlad, pacquiao, marquez, etc
I agree to a extent - Khan being criticised like crazy after the Prescott disaster. But, Hatton got beaten by vastly superior fighters - their skills set was too much.
It also sounds like they get overrated - good fighters like Pavlik, but get far more recognition than what their skills deserve. Its a good thread this.
Muhammad Ali won olympic gold at 18 & the HWT title at barely 22... he was around for roughly 2 decades.
khan is a good example. in his debut fight people hyped him to be the next mayweather p4p etc but in one fight his jaw got exposed and no1 gave him the time of day now.
Tyson is a 2 time champ who has won 12 out of 16 championship bouts, his problem was that he stayed around too long. Calslappy is a fraud who hid behind the unrecognised WBOGUS title while ducking a peak RJJ. Most guys lose to shitty fighters at the end of thier career because they stick around too long.
notice after the win against a washed-up barrera the uk commentators were yelling ''a star is born'' . get him with prescott again and he'll get put to sleep again and the hype will be over :rofl.
Well they were at the end of their careers...obviously faded fighters are going to get beat by fighters they can't hang with anymore just on age value alone. I think the premise of your argument is right but you may be using the wrong examples.
I get a sensitive nervous system everytime Khan fights, especially post Prescott, but this time round it will be different - though there will be very nervous moments for Khan.
I would say the commentators were more desperate than anything, trying to keep the hype alive even though the Barrera fight should have been stopped after the cut in the first. Khan definitely needs more tests.
