Is anyone else excited about the WBO NABO MW champion who is getting ready to make his first title defense on April 16th??? How long untill Fernando is no longer satisfied with this belt and steps and establishes his dominance in the MW division!!! All aboard!!!!!! He fights at 160LBS...And I'm a fan...Good all-action fan-friendly style and great power...Like the kid.
But he needs to work on defence...Too much hittable for top league...He struggled against Gabriel Rosado and Ossie Duran who are top gatekeepers but nothing more...Need some time to work on his skills especially defence before making a big step up...His next opponent Michael Walker (19-3-2 12KO) will be a good test for him...He gave highly ranked Daniel Jacobs (Now 19-0 16KO) a tough fight losing by decision...
I agree with that assessment, but don't think he really struggled with Duran that much! He won a SD with leads of 4 and 2 on 2 of the judges cards...I had 3. The other judge had it even, now I don't really believe that was a KD in rd 10, but rather a slip. Since it was ruled a KD it had to be scored as such even by those of us who didn't agree. Other than that he would likely have won by 5-3 & 2..The bad KD call made the scores look closer than it was IMHO! Brickhaus, makes some other good observations (badlefthook.com)and notes some other areas of improvements for Guerrero to make adjustments in prior to stepping his competition (which has been pretty good for this stage of his career). His upcoming fight should be a nice test and maybe even a gauge of how he stacks up compared to jacob's and some other MW prospects. I see a tough MW division blooming on us in the next 3-5 years!
I love the kid. Not just because he is Dominican, but, because he is a really good kid, who, gives back to his community. He is still young. With time, he will develop and the power could be scary.
He is a class act! My kids go to school in Fruitland, basically a suberb of salisbury and many of their teachers also taught Fernando. He left behind memories of his character and is remembered fondly by all of them. He still devotes plenty of time to the community and youth.
War Guerrero! I first seen him fight on ESPN and I was rooting for him cuz I heard he was from MD but I found out he was a pretty good fighter too. He seems to be improving every outing. He needs to tighten up his D a bit, but he has all the tools to be a really good fighter.
Yeah, its always good to have a hometown guy to root for! fernando is starting to get some recognition and tv time with the cable networks and has looked good against the comp he has faced so far. I agree that he needs to strengthen his D a little bit and fine tune some other asspects of his game, but I think he is poised to win the fight this friday against Walker who stood in good against jacobs. might give us a little better barrometer of where Fernando is. I am hoping the win will propell him into a big time fight by early to mid of 2011 and follow that up by a title shot by the end of next year or early 2012 at the latest!
