Pac and May. The two best of their generation fighting to see who will be acknowledged as THE best.

Now, maybe this has happened before.. Say with Leonard-Hagley

But has this situation ever happened where at the time it was acknowledged at the time that the fight was happening, and not just years later in retrospect?

EDIT: noticed the hagler-hagley typo but i'm keeping it cause its awesome

I would say Leonard v Hearns was bigger than the Hagler fight but just my 2 cents. Obviously the Ali v Fraser/Foreman fights were insainely huge and that was pre internet.

This fight has had so much build up its insaine, but most of the build up and politics will simply be unknown to the casual. I have friends/Family that are crazy on sports and they couldnt tell you a May or Pac opponent. They aint that big in the UK.

How do you think the winner will be elevated legacy wise? For me it has to take them top 10 ATG. Im a firm believer the modern day fighters are bigger, faster and better than previous eras. The winner of this fight has to go down in history as one of the greatest ever.

This'll no doubt be merged by one of our glorious leaders. Now the fight is signed there is no reason to lump all these threads together.

There was one detailing ring size, gloves etc. as per fat dan and that got moved. Ridiculous.

To ask if it has happened before shows you are new to boxing.

Obviously there have been things like Ali-Frazier, Leonard-Duran. But I'm wondering about the sentiment of the time, not how we view these things decades after the fact.

Maybe Ali/Frazier. Not sure they were considered p4p best at the time though if that concept was even thrown around.

Both were considered the top 2 best/greatest fighters of their generation at the time the fight happened?

Chavez was already established as an ATG, crazy 80 something-0 winning streak and was looking to make history and win a belt in his 4th weight class. Not to mention he was p4p number 1.

Whitaker was already a superstar, bordering ATG, being number 2 in the p4p ranks. Olympic Gold Medalist, former undisputed LW champ, IBF JWW champ and current and reigning WBC Champ.

Was a fight for the ages that was spoiled from a robbery. After that fight Chavez declined and Whitaker reigned as the number 1 p4p fighter for a few years until the DLH fight.
