What was the story on the Fleeman fight, Senor? All I can find is that it was stopped in the 6th round because of a broken rib. Did it smell like a fix?
Mr. Bill, Oh Yea, It was a 'record-padder' set-up fight on February 21, 1961. One of those Tuesday Night Fights at the Auditorium in Miami Beach. Donnie Fleeman had his ribs 'busted up' in Italy, by Santo Amonti on October 30, 1960. Then, on January 23, 1960 - he got them smashed again, by Pete Rademacher up in Washington. He retired after the bout with Pete, but the 'Lousiville Group' put up some 'extra dough' to get Donnie to come to Miami Beach to take on Cassius Clay to be a 'record padder punching-bag'. The 28 year-old Donnie, all 6' 2" and 180 lbs. (a skinny ******* with no meat on his bones and broken ribs) went into the ring with Cassius Clay. Donnie was supposed to 'go down' in the 3rd-Round. Well Donnie changed up the plans, and just stayed in the ring, letting Cassius Clay hit him with everything he had. The 'joke', Donnie was laughing at Cassius in the 3rd, 4th and 5th Rounds, which made the young Heavyweight look 'foolish'. In the 6th Round, Donnie dropped his hands, while laughing and telling Clay 'Hit me, c'mon hit me, please hit me with something hard'. Cassius tried, but couldn't dent Donnie at all, who was still laughing at Clay at the end of the Round. As the bell for Round 7 rang, Donnie got up to come out for the start of the round, but the Referee said 'enough'. Afterwards, Donnie said, 'no big deal I got my money, and I really retired 4-weeks ago after fighting Pete'.
That's hilarious. Made my weekend!! Great story.:good Clay must have been grooming his fix machine for the Liston fight. I guess it took a few warm ups before the big one, to iron out the kinks.
