As the title suggests. Which fights did you call early and say one would win over the other and at the time it was an upset win?
Technically not an upset since he didn't get the decison, but I picked Fury to beat Wilder in their first fight
I can't name any 42-1 Buster Douglas type upsets, but I called these before they were signed... This content is protected : I kept seeing signs from my spirit guides(?) everywhere I went like Pac-man air conditioning services or the Pac-10 Championships, or else I never would've picked Pacquiao. This was the only fight out of the 4 that I replied here where I thought Pacquiao was crazy for facing DeLaPuto. This content is protected : Didn't see any signs but couldn't believe Hopkins was such a huge underdog. This content is protected : Hopkins was on a mission that fight and I knew that he knew it was his destiny. This content is protected : I remembered reading a boxing article back in 1994 suggesting Sugar Shane was the man to beat The Golden Boy and for some reason it stuck with me for a very long time.
Toney v Nunn. I just had the feeling Nunn was taking it a bit too easy in fights lately. I didn't know much about James, but I liked what I saw. A friend, a big Nunn fan, said he was looking forward to the fight, which was on that Saturday. On the Wednesday before, I told him that Nunn was courting disaster if he took it easy on Saturday. I can't say Nunn took it easy; he fought quite well, but Toney got to him regardless. My friend thought I was a boxing sage after that. (Which wasn't true, but that fight made me look like one)
I made a lot of money betting on Marciano over Walcott 1, in their first fight. I made a bundle betting on Foreman over Frazier 1. Then I made another bundle betting on Ali over Foreman. That all sounds quite impressive except I also lost money betting on Louis to beat Charles, and Ali to beat Frazier in their first fight. I did feel vindicated, though, when Ali won the next two. Lately. I made some on Fury over Wilder in their second meeting (should have bet a lot more on that one...that darn healed up cut had me going easy on that fight...dummy me).
Not so much an upset, but Lewis vs Grant. Grant was being hyped as the next big thing, but in getting dropped twice by Golota, I knew it was going to be an early ko loss for him against Lennox.
Yeah I was confident about Lewis going into that fight. Grant didn’t look that good and not a natural fighter whereas Lewis most definitely was. I had a bad vibe going into Jones-Tarver that Roy was in strife. Coming down in weight, dwindling motivation after winning a heavyweight title, age and the fact Tarver was a big Lt Heavy and a southpaw who could crack concerned me. Roy won but struggled and I was still concerned for the rematch but I didn’t see it unfolding quite like that. I thought Hopkins was going to beat Trinidad. It was just a feeling that Hopkins was a ripped, fit, taller, tough, well rounded, big middleweight whereas Tito was a little tubby looking at 160 and struggled against De Lá Hoya who was probably the best technician he’d faced (not counting washed up Whitaker) up to Hopkins. it was just a gut feel. I had a similar gut feel for Rigondeux-Donaire too.
I won't say i out and out picked him but i told a few mates someone as good and as smart as SRL wouldn't be coming back to fight Hagler if he didn't think he had a chance of winning.
It may not of been a massive fight but Tony Thompson was around 7 or 8-1 to beat David Price unbeaten at the time and getting a load of hype, had a big feeling of the bookies had this wrong, big time odds wise. Being old school I only bet at the bookies not online and away on holiday I just didn't back the hunch, kicking myself when I watched the fight. They rematched straight away and the bookies still had TT 7/2 so had a few quid always as well back of my mind think the stats say around 80% of rematches go the same way as the first, always worth bearing in mind
Pacquiao > De La Hoya (To quote Eddie Hearn ''tits are irrelevant.'' Size was irrelevant. I just knew Oscar was done.) Barrera > Prince Naseem (This might not be an upset to the experts, but I know Barrera was underdog in a lot of bookies.)
Roberto Duran over Moore, after watching him beat Cuevas and reading an article where it said Duran was training angrily for Moore I knew he was going to beat him. I just didn't know he'd almost kill him.
Pacquiao vs Thurman Had Donaire reaching the finals against Inoue before the tournament Froch vs Bute Martinez vs Pavlik
I actually called Douglas beating Tyson. Drunken babble about his dad and bloodlines and stuff in the bar with my buddy before the fight but he gave me credit for it and I did say it.
Sanders / Klitschko. I knew what Corrie could do when he was on point and I knew that he knew this was his last chance. He was going to bring fire and brimstone and that version of Klitschko did not look especially difficult for somebody with Sanders' speed and power to land on.
