I personally was shocked at that one. I could not have been more wrong.

Fury to beat Klitshcko. I knew it was closer than the odds suggested but during furys ring walk I bet a lot on my phone, I could tell something big was going to happen. Thank god he rid the heavyweight division of that reign. For all his flaws I will appreciate him for that

Jose Luis Ramirez stoppage of Edwin Rosario on Nov 3 1984, by TKO 4, after Rosario had decked Ramirez twice. Ramirez had Edwin in a neutral corner, raining punches at will. Jose Luis wins the WBC Lightweight Title.

A slight upset by Vegas odds, I cleaned up in high school betting Larry Holmes over Gerry Cooney.

Back then there were a lot of people who watched boxing, just casuals but they’d watch that as easily as a football game or baseball, basketball, etc., on a weekend afternoon and the kids at my school were buying into the Cooney hype.

I was already a huge boxing fan and just absorbed everything I could about the sport. I’d pick up newspapers like The NY Times at the school library and just pour through for results and read all the magazines. And I knew Larry was the real deal.

I also picked Evander over Tyson (both times) but no money on that one, alas.

@Richard M Murrieta picked Braddock over Baer and I think @djanders put 25 cents (a week’s salary!) on Corbett over Sullivan.

Don't forget, though, that those were Indian Head Pennies, worth a lot more than today's zinc ones. Not only that, but I put 25 big ones on Sullivan over Ryan, Liberty Heads.

I picked Fury to beat Wlad which was a much bigger upset at the time than youngsters may now think.

When the Donald Curry-Lloyd Honeyghan fight was arranged I,like most, thought that Curry was a prohibitive favourite. Even though Lloyd was very good,Curry had already been annointed as the best in the world second to Marvelous Marvin Hagler. After Don had knocked out Milton McCrory to unify the welterweight title,Colin Jones said he was as good as Sugar Ray Leonard. One of the many plaudits he was given.
Right up to the day of the fight I gave Lloyd a chance of giving Curry a competitive fight but that was it. Then I saw an interview with Honeyghan that afternoon. He was so positive and cool about it all. And so confident ! I recall saying to my friends down the pub that night that an upset could well be on the cards. I wish I'd have placed a bet.
