Naseem Hamed v Juan Manuel Marquez

There was always a bit of talk about Naz ducking Marquez, or maybe circumstances worked against a possible showdown, but that is not really what I'm here to discuss.

I want to know who you would think would have won the fight if the two had have met in the ring. At the time that Marquez was the mandatory Naz may well have been past his prime a tad, and Marquez may not have reached his prime, having peaked at a later age. So for convenience sake I will make this a prime-4-prime contest.

I'm a bit torn on the matter of the outcome. The gift of hindsight tells me that, as the superior boxer, Marquez would have done a better job on Hamed than Barrera did; but of course that was not prime Hamed in there with Marco. I also have to think that Naz is a stronger and probably faster version of Pac, and that he would have KO'd Marquez at some point in the mid to late rounds. But then Naz probably doesn't have as great a chin as Pac does and the accumulation of pinpoint punches landed may give Marquez the edge. But then Naz wasn't really chinny; he just had severe balance issues. And of course Barrera probably has a better chin than Marquez.

    Help me out here guys:huh

I just voted Marquez points but in the time it took to vote I may have changed my mind to Naz by knockout. Naz was training harder back then and if Pac could knock Marquez down three times...

It is a hard one to call.

I'm a big Marquez fan, but I always try to look at things subjectively (except with Hatton - I'm sorry I hate him as a fighter and it probably does cloud my judgement).

But taking into account the two styles, Marquez and Hamed, I'm at a loss to predict the outcome.

In his three biggest fights he has been knocked down. Yes he spent the majority of each fight outboxing his opponent, and I'd expect the same in the Naz fight, but there were moments where he was badly hurt in each. I just think if he gets into a position where he is knocked down and badly hurt against Naz he'd get stopped. So Naz by KO with Marquez ahead on points.

    Marquez.

Marquez is a much better technical boxer than Barrera and Barrera schooled Naz.

Plus JMM has an excellent chin and a massive heart.

JMM on points or late stoppage.

like the sound of that, but if naz was really behind on points his head might go down. That would be my only worry

JMM by landslide points decision. It's not like Barrera was the only guy who gave Hamed problems. JMM would whip him even worse. Plus, how many really great fighters arond their prime did Hamed face?

If it gets past the first few rounds Marquez would outpoint him. But theres a chance of the Prince finishing him early.

I think MAB, Barerra and JMM beats Naz in their primes, all via UD

Marquez is a much better technical fighter than Barrera. Is he an overall better fighter than Marco and i tend not to agree. But as far as pure boxing skill goes i believe Marquez is better than both Barrera and Morales.

Hamed never fought a fighter who came to win, and when he did in Barrera he lost heart and he got torn down a peg or two.

Pure boxing skill? Bit vague but presumably your impressed by his high left hand and excellent punch selection? I've no problems with that he is a VERY good boxer however saying he was a better boxer then Barrera with any certainty is silly they have practically identical styles. Barrera was a better puncher and when it came to having a tear up was much more capable then Marquez who, lets remember; lost to Chris John and was very nearly stopped by Pac in the first round.
This devalues your original opinion.... You may as well have a big banner saying 'i'm a hater'. All Hameds high profile opponents came to win with the exception of Vuyani Bungu and Said Lawal. He fought noted triers like Jose Badillo, Wayne McCullough, Paul Ingle, Augie Sanchez and Manual Medina plus he fought them when he was pst his best.

I respect your view on Barrera but i could say the same that Barrera was stopped and outpointed by Junior Jones and virtually gave up in his first fight against Pacquaio and in the rematch it was a sparring session. Marquez gave a better account of himself in both fights against Pacquaio and alot of people had him winning both fights.

Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the most underated fighters today. He has very good boxing skills, is a good puncher and has tons of heart.

About Hamed i am not a fan but am certainly not a hater. When the going got tough Hamed opted out. Out of the fighters you named they are all borderline top 10 at featherweight. McCullough and Bungu where very good super bantamweights but elite level featherweights?
