Dawson was the champ, you gotta give the champ a chance to survive. Early stoppage.

At first I thought he could have at least let him walk out there for a couple of seconds to see if he was going to try and defend himself. But the problem with that? It was 1:00 into the first round and Stevenson wasn't tired, hadn't thrown himself out, and was in full strength. There was no chance of Dawson surviving.

:think i thought so too at first but then again it was Chad Dawson. Concidering the way he went down and his chin history i´d say it was a good stoppage. He was clearly still dazed and a brutal knockout loss would have been really bad for him.

I disagree. He was out of it. He got up, but was wobbling away from the ref. The ref gave him every chance to continue, but he didn't have all his faculties. In most cases, I would say you give the champ the benefit of the doubt, but in this case he just wasn't responsive enough and I thought it was a good stoppage.

He was the champ. I think it was an early stoppage. He was still not really there, but he could have come back. There are not amateur and they make money out of it. I think though Dawson himself think it was an ok stoppage. I don't think Dawson really has a warrior attitude (do or die).

Agreed. The ref looked him right in the eye, and Dawson didn't really seem as if he wanted back in. Made some half hearted attempt to reach out to the ref, but seemed ok with the idea of the stoppage.

:deal That's the thing. Dawson didn't seem to really wanting go back in the cage with the lion. He could have still come back, a lot of fighters do (a lot more get then ktfo:yep though). Chad preferred to preserve his health.

at first i thought it was to early.. even yelled at the TV..."he's the champ, give him a chance"... but at the last second when the ref asked for him to step forward... he just couldn't

better it gets stopped and we wonder if it was to soon then dawson really seriously hurt and us asking why didnt the ref stop it....

dawson was done IMO..... either that punch that stopped it or the next 3 after that had he fought on... he was done!!...... better safe then sorry in my book

Don't like to admit it ,as I have a very low opinion of Canadian officials but this stoppage was spot on. Look at Dawson's eyes, he was out of it. I'm just glad it wasn't Marlon B Wright reffing this one

The job of the ref is to ensure the rules are enforced and to ensure, to the best of abilities, the safety of both fighters. Whether or not a guy is a champion has **** to do with it. Being a champion does not stop you from getting hurt. The refs are trained to look at specific indicators in these situations and then make a quick ruling. Dawson was dazed, and not very responsive. The ref made a good stoppage. Now Mares vs. De Leon, that looked like a premature stoppage.

it was a quick stoppage as the man was champion. it was 1 punch. ive seen guys get up just as shaky and hold on an survive the round. its more than likely dawson would get nailed again and not make it to the 2nd round. but at least allow a 2nd knockdown.....
