Could you imagine it was Karelin, instead of Severn, on top of Royce in the finals of UFC 4? *shudders*
The point I was making is that there is a clear disconnect between two views in this thread. Some people think that being the best at TDD for 1 round is better than being good at TDD for 5 rounds. It all depends on how the question is framed. If you have perfect technique, but not the natural cardio (i.e. never sufficiently trainable) to be able to apply it for more than a couple of minutes, then I believe there are two definitions of best TDD.
No. The point people are making is that against people his own size BJ has a super-human takedown defense but against people significantly bigger than him he tends to get worn down due to giving up so much size and strength.
In the two fights Frankie went for 22 takedowns. He got 4. In the two fights BJ Penn went for 3 (all in the second fight). He got 2.
Also he's a controversial one for you - in terms of being able to block throws (as opposed to leg takedowns) I'm not sure you'll find anyone better than Anderson Silva. His upper body strength is scary at times.
Daniel Cormier hasn't been taken down yet and I get the feeling that throughout his career he probably wont be.
He still is brilliant. Getting outgrappled by Jon Jones and getting clipped by a heavy-handed murderer like Shogun do not mean someone is not brilliant. He is still a brilliant fighter who will absolutely slaughter Ryan Bader and very soon be back in title contention.
Are you serious here Will? Do you really not see how you are NOT talking specifically about TDD? You are using Penn's overall game and career to talk about one specific aspect of his game, which is nonsense.
But that's BJ's career in a nutshell....excuses, p4p rd 1 BJ is as skilled as anybody, GSP has great TDD but has been taken down CC had great TDD, Chuck and Dos still really hasn't been taken down.
