    And that means...?

Your whole point was about bigger fighters.

I gave you a smaller fighter than he who both took him down and won both fights.

Sorry I thought that the fact Penn repelled 82% of Edgar's takedowns showed that he had awesome takedown defence. Silly me.

And here I was thinking that what was considered a "takedown attempt" was Edgar half-assed attempting from pretty far out with the aim of not necessarily taking him down but putting the idea in Penn's mind. Kind of like how a jab from way out of range can be considered a strike attempt.

But that's thinking in context. Silly me.

NOw you're inside Frankie Edgars head? Did you help him with that gameplan?

Frankie Edgar got takedowns in the 2nd fight because he was just too damn quick, BJ was too slow and Edgar kept keeping him off guard. Darrel Revis still fails on some throws and the guy he's covering catches a pass.....that doesn't mean he isn't the best corner in the league. Michael Jordan gave up points at times, but he was still the best defending guard when he played.

Why has not one damn person, who's arguing against BJ, answered my question. That is, who else can give up 20lbs of muscle, to an elite wrestler (best wrestler in the division) and fight off relelentless takedown attempts for a full round?

Do you think GSP could stop Sonnens takedowns for a full round? Noting GSP is closer to Sonnen's size, than BJ is to his :deal

Well, I think at the very least, we can say that BJ Penn has better takedown defense than Hughes, Koscheck, Fitch, Alves and Shields. Because he had more success defending GSPs takedowns than any of those guys did, and they are all MUCH bigger than him.

GSP has some good TDD prolly the best but Jose Aldo, JDS and CC are honorable mentions

Prime Cro Cop maybe. Gonzaga took him down with relatively no resistance though. :deal

I'd add Machida to that mix also.

    Note:

Remember GSPs TDD in the 1st Hughes fight. That one takedown, when he was basically in the air and Hughes still couldn't get him. That was insane.

That means that Penn might have better TDD than Kos/Fitch/Alves/Hughes, but that doesn't mean it's better than GSP's. This crap about "for one round Penn's TDD is the best" seems to come along with anything people want to say about Penn. Does it mean anything at all that from the second round on he's getting taken down by guys that aren't 100% fresh either? Does anything matter apart from going balls to the wall to laud Penn's talent and makes excuses for the way he loses?

Also, until I see Sonnen/Munoz/Weidman/Hendo take GSP down then that doesn't figure into this argument. The best wrestler's he's faced (Kos, Hughes) he's done a great job of staying off of his back. Penn hasn't. And why aren't we counting Edgar taking him down again? He could easily make 145, so now I ask, do you really believe that some guy could come up from 155 and take GSP down the way Edgar took down Penn?

You must accept that BJ (natural lightweight) fending off TD's from GSP, Fitch and Hughes is different to GSP (natural welterweight) fending off TD's from other natural welterweights such as Hughes, Kos and Fitch. There is a very big difference.

And so bored of everyone continually harping on about how Frankie Edgar is really a featherweight. What is it about Edgar that makes people think he is a feather, the fact that he's never fought there once since before 2007 at least? He is 5ft 6in, the same height as Matt Serra and Sean Sherk. If you watch Edgar's fight with Ben Henderson, who everyone seems to have decided is really a welterweight, Edgar's upper body is just as big and bulky, it seems to be his height that gives the impression he's a much smaller man, but he isn't. Don't listen to Rogan and Goldberg talking shite, look at the footage. Edgar may not be quite as big as Maynard, who is a big lightweight, but he is a perfectly normal-sized lightweight, not undersized at all.

This is someone who is undersized for a weight class:

Don't you see what you're doing here though? You're evaluating Penn on guys who he fought and who took him down (sometimes over and over again) in their fights and evaluating GSP on who he HASN'T fought who you think could take him down. Every guy that Penn as faced that GSP has faced has taken Penn down and hasn't taken down GSP, with the exception of Kos once. Incidentally, Kos is a better wrestler than Penn has ever fought and based on what Hughes and Fitch were able to do to him, you'd probably guess he'd be able to get Penn down too. IF GSP and Penn fought the same guys and none of them could take either guy down, I'd give it to Penn because he's smaller, but the bottom line is Penn gets taken down a lot more than GSP against the same guys.

As for Edgar, the "he could be a 145er" thing is based on how much weight he cuts (or doesn't) to make 155. He wrestled at 141 in college. Also, don't just quote heights when comparing Edgar to Sherk and Serra (Kendal Grove is taller than Shane Carwin after all) but look at their builds. If you're going to claim that Edgar is just as "big" as those guys and quote his number of fights at 155 then **** it, Penn has fought damn near as many fights at 170 and above as he has at 155. You gotta play it the same both ways.

Surely it is GSP. I have memories of him stuffing serious TD attempts but how many times has he been:
    a) taken down
    b) actually put on his back
    c) held on his back for any significant amount of time for damage to be done
