The first mistake Cotto made against Margarito

I like Cotto too....I think he has a stellar career even after the loss. but he can be great! He's not yet, but he beat Shane Mosely and that is a HUGE accomplishment for anyone at WW or Super WW. The loss to Marg is chalked up to styles and game plan. Cotto had the right game plan he just could follow through with it for 12 rounds. had Cotto won....Many would be calling him Great right now. I would still have my reservations but there is no doubt Cotto can be a great fighter if he learns from this loss.

 

He never said Cotto has major power. He doesn't.
He said Cotto and his team believed that.

 

his first mistake was signing the fight margarito is one of the hungriest fighters in the sport just give the man his due is not only what cotto didnt do its what margarito was doing to cotto

 

He didn't change his game plan he just made a non verbal agreement with Marg during the fight that he would go toe to toe. I'm not sure what you saw in the earlier rounds but Cotto faught brillantly both Offensive and deffensively:huh He avoided almost everything Marg was throwing the 1st half of the fight...he just let his PR Pride control his actions and ended up fighting MARGS fight the 2nd half. Which of course caused Cotto to loose that nice shiney "0". So NO....from round 1 through 5 it was pretty much all Cotto, but with that said Marg didn't look to be in trouble ONCE even with all the flush punches cotto was landing.

 

I agree with that! Although for the majority of the fight he was boxing with shane...almost like he didn't want to make it a fight with the Older great.

Cotto should of never fought Margo.
By the way --- they both wore the same gloves.
Cotto gets licked no matter what gloves he wore.

We have to agree that there was almost no body punching from Cotto (which could have helped him down the stretch), I think Cotto continued to press on the head given that Margo was so easy to hit (big mistake).

I also repeat, Margo won (props to him) but he was the bigger man, he has a rock for a head and had better stamina. I think that the cut to the mouth early in the fight took a lot out of Cotto, by the time he was swallowing blood that impaired his ability to breathe and killed his legs - he was there to be killed by a stronger Margarito.

I invite you all to revisit this fight along with Corrales/Freitas... the feeling was the same after the first half of the fight. It was only a matter of time until the bigger man caught the smaller one.

Also, regardless of his arrogance, the Cotto fight should be an indicator that Floyd Mayweather would box Margo's ears off.

In the meantime, viva Mexico and viva the Welterweight King Margarito
(who I will be watching closely, but I don't think we'll see him as well in the next fight)

 

Cotto fought a great fight, he won some rds. Margarito is just a super durable, solid chinned bad azz that hits HARD with VOLUME.

 

Good point,,, If the plan was to outbox him, why not push for the bigger mitts? But, then again , It's hard to critisize Cotto's fight plan... it was working great until he ran out of gas... I think they knew they couldn't stand there and slug with Tony.

What other options did he have?

 

But Margarito WAS taking very clean and strong punches through rounds 1-7 and his head WAS snapping and sweat WAS flying all over the place. Of course he hasn't got MAJOR power, but he has decent power and was landing at will in the first half of the fight.

 

I wonder if there is anything to this? It's not the worst speculation I've ever heard...Maybe team Cotto thinks the same and this is part of the reason they think a rematch is worth attempting?
