It's wasn't seen as being so great at the time, tho I agree that often perspective is not good in next day reports. And again, there is the issue that Greb had beaten Gibbons twice since 1920.
ive watched the gibbons fight...seems dempsey won that fight without any real question in my mind at least.
I believe that is more to do with expectations. They held Dempsey in huge esteem. let me put this another way, it would be a great achievement for anyone to outbox a prime gibbons coming off a 2 year lay off.
It didn't sound so much like he outboxed him with some magical skill. He was just giving him a beat down with plenty of the rough stuff mixed in. However, your point is well-taken.
1. Willard 2. Firpo 3.Carpentier 4.Brennan 5.Tunney 2 I know tunney II sounds funny for one of his best performances but Jack had a lot of ring rust before their first fight got soundly beat took the tune up with sharkey and came back to almost defeat Tunney the more active, fresher, younger newly crowned champion. He showed heart and it took character to give Tunney the fight he did. His last great stand was the long count and though controversial I dont make excuses for the L nor did dempsey.
In what sense did he "outclass" him? He fought hard and dirty, which is what it takes sometimes. Ringside accounts make it sound like he was just stronger, hit harder and had a lenient ref that allowed every opportunity for the rough stuff.
In the sense he won the vast majority of the fight, gibbons never came close to winning and by the end jack's lead was emphatic.
Totally agree. But it's not like he gave a master's class in boxing science. This is one of those fights that looks a lot better in hindsight than the contemporaries saw it. And again, I agree with those with better perspective. I think this makes my top 5.
