In some ways constantly bullying a man of that high a skill level is masterful. He used his assets as best he could and thus won a very clear decision. Sure there's disappointment by those who see him as a Demi -god because he couldn't destroy everyone who stepped foot in the ring with him. But he won very clearly against an unquestionably great opponent.
He lost every round of that except for about 30 second in the seventh. People forget that once Tunney's head cleared in the seventh he was back to bashing Dempsey again. Nobody ever focuses on the fact that these fights were so short for championships. Had they actually been 15 rounders Dempsey would have been knocked out in both of them. Thats not even up for debate. He was getting brutalized at the end of both.
He didnt wear him down as much as he hit him when he wasnt looking. Thats an interesting detail you left out. It was just a cheap way to win a fight moreso than a Great Performance.
Sharkey was a fine fighter. No dispute. The way Dempsey did it wasnt impressive and it certainly wasnt a "great performance". Not questioning the official result of the bout. Great name on his record doesnt = Great Performance. Thats the thread title. if that was one of Jack Demspey`s 5 greatest performances then he really was overated. I certainly hope it wasnt.atsch
I had the Gibbons victory on the cusp of my top 5. My recent reading of contemporary accounts of the fight, which lambasted Dempsey and his effort and the assistance he received from the ref, swayed me to exclude it. However, as I am the one often championing perspective as opposed to rash next day judgements, I had to maintain my consistency of logic. Still, Greb beat Gibbons twice over the three 3 years previous. Just goes to show what qualifies as a "great performance" for Dempsey.
He sure as hell wore Sharkey down with thunderous body blows as can be seen on film. Dempsey knew he had no more speed left, so he had to suck it up and go to the body and as Sharkey later opined. "everywhere Dempsey hit you he could dislocate a bone". The 32 year old Dempsey took good shots from the Boston Gob, but eventually wore down the talented but inconsistent Sharkey, who was weakening and in the act of "complaining " got flattened by a short Dempsey left-hook [ Protect yourself at all times]
Firpo was a good victory. He'd arguably established himself as top contender by knocking out Willard. Jack basically walked through him. a fine victory no doubt but the one performance we can genuinely question as to his h2h worth.
Why is Williard a good victory? I mean it's williard who was even further past his best and inactive than when Dempsey beat him
