The Floyd Mayweather "0" effect is dissipating

I don’t think there is 0 effect rather Mayweather was just a unique fighter a massive box office hit who never lost. His true legacy is his boxing record in terms of his quality of opposition winning his fights and the business promotional side showing its possible to generate over $300 Million for himself in a single fight which he did twice. Credit must go to his Money Team and Uncle Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe. The $750,000 to buy him out of his Top Rank promotional contract was a great investment. Fighters now realize they can keep more of the gravy.

 

The great fighters are remembered through their fights. 20 years from now on boxing forums like these when new fans come to learn about the sport In this era they will be directed towards all the great pacquiao fights, and they will rarely watch the boring maywether dance offs.

 

Undefeated just tells me you never challenged yourself.

 

Mayweather was never amazing too watch if you're looking for entertainment. But you will see a master at defensive boxing movement and luring oppents onto the front foot.

But seems it's ok for Mayweather but for anyone else they ran away the hole fight. Floyd was tidy tho no question

 

He lost to JLC. Had to fight an MMA guy with ZERO pro boxing experience to get his 50th win. The 0 in his record NEVER had any effect on those that actually follow the sport.

 

Wilder is not a big star.

 

The NSAC & Vegas boxing officials deserve the credit for Floyd keeping his bogus 0 intact. In all fairness he should have at least 4 losses & one N/C. Theyve done the same thing for Canelo since keeping his to his bogus one loss

 

In all honesty the O means nothing... Floyd has accomplished a lot in his career which makes him stand out. But him being the best ever and all of that nonsense is exactly that nonsense. Some of the greats like Robinson, Pep, Greb, Moore, etc had between 100-300 fights with a handful of losses. Floyds a great fighter no doubt about it, but he’s also a great salesman. In the end Pacquiao will have had the better career even with losses.

 

Like most boxing fans I totally agree that 0's carry a cachet that's both misleading and, ultimately, damaging to the sport in terms of the quality of match-up we get.

But I don't really agree that Mayweather's record is *outrageously* padded. There are far worse offenders out there, notably Calzhage [sorry] and probably Marciano. Wilder was shaping up to be the worst offender of all before he took a chance on Fury being shot & lived to regret it.

It's one of the things that MMA does far better than boxing - e.g. McGregor as a still youngish guy has 4 losses on his record but remains easily the biggest draw in his sport.

 

I thought what you meant by '0 effect' is that Floyd only fought fighters whom he know has ZERO chance in beating him

 

Yeah Floyds been bad for boxing. His toxic money persona, A side cherry picking and undefeated marketing has been copied a lot and continues to be.
Thats why the best dont fight the best. Also his safety first style turned of all the casuals. Thats why done more bad for boxing than good imo.

So Floyd's to blame for some of the best boxers today not fighting each other? Really? I think you're crediting him with more influence, than he deserves.

 

I don't think it matters for fans, or in some cases fighters who are resilient enough to come back stronger. The "0" is still an important factor for the promoters and the career management of a fighter. Unlike the UFC with all it's match making and contract negotiations done by one organisation, Boxing is a giant fragmented, bureaucratic, poltical mess, it can be very challenging to position a fighter towards the important, well paid prize fights. It's a sport which is easy to fall by the wayside following a loss and boxers can spend a lot of time in the wilderness with one slip up, once a fighter becomes a household name it's a bit different, but I can see why promoters take a lot of care about matchmaking, I wish it wasn't the case and fights were more frequent and there was less politics.
