Joe Frazier was wealthy and *****-whipped in early '73..... Frazier took the green but hulking George Foreman lightly in Jamaica... I swear, Frazier looked wobbly upon entering the ring...... Still, styles make fights...... Foreman had Frazier's number........ Simple..... MR.BILL:smoke
Hahaha I've always thought that looked a bit wierd - the first knockdown puzzled me even more than the wierd last knockdown - the first time Frazier goes down his knee buckled under him before Foremans glove has even connected??? It's bizarre - I've rewinded it and replayed it and his knee goes to the floor before the punch connects??? It's wierd - a bit like how Johnson dropped prior to Ketchels swing even gettin near him. Plus can't remember which knockdown it was probably the 3rd or 4th where Frazier is taking glancing shots to the back of the head as he's trying to escape away along the ropes and Frazier starts hopping up and down then for some reason which again is a bit wierd and then there's the Frazier going into orbit knockdown at the end haha that's just bizarre makes me laugh every time I watch it
I agree. Frazier was not in top form in Jamaica. The Frazier of the late 60s or very early 70s would have presented George Foreman with a much sterner test. Even Foreman said that he thought Frazier was damaged goods after the Ali fight and that any fighter with a good left hand who fought the post-Ali version had a good chance of beating him.
In the postfight interview....in the ring someone asked Foreman if Frazier's left hook had bother him. Foreman responded: "That thing was his left hook???" then Foreman laughed.
i always thought that he was in the process of throwing a leading left hook when he got hit with that uppercut, hence the lift.
I've watched that fight nearly a dozen times and never once associated that little delayed hop as the fabled "Foreman lifting Frazier off his feet" incident until I had it pointed out to me. I'd always just assumed it was a more subtle incident earlier in the fight that I must have missed. But no, it's that goofy little hop. Really sad that there are fans who still believe that aggrandising nonsense. Even sadder that they didn't spot it for what it wasn't the first time they saw it on film.
lennox had a tremendous uppercut. someone already posted a clip but that was one of his best weapons, along with his overhand right
